PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Trail Blazers who got off to such a strong start this season re-emerged against Washington Wizards. "The ball was moving. It was a lot of fun to be out there," Wesley Matthews said. "Thats how we play. Thats how we got on a roll, thats how we got to be one of the hottest teams." Matthews matched his season high with 28 points, including four 3-pointers, and the Portland defeated the Wizards 116-103 on Thursday night. Damian Lillard added 23 points and 10 assists for the Blazers, who are still playing without injured All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge. Portland (45-24) remained in fifth place in the Western Conference with three victories in their last four games after slumping with a four-game losing streak. The Wizards (35-33) have lost two straight to open four-game swing against the Western Conference while they vie for a playoff spot in the East to end a five-year absence. Washington currently sits sixth in their conference. John Wall had 24 points and 14 assists for Washington, which trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half. "They are a team that gets hot from time to time," Wall said. "And they got hot and made some contested shots, they rotated the ball and guys knocked down their shots." Portland played small in Aldridges absence and finished with 32 assists on 41 field goals. " I think right now were just moving the ball really well," Lillard said. "And when youre moving the ball, you put yourself in position to make shots." Wizards centre Marcin Gortat was scratched from the lineup just before the game because of a lower back strain. It was the first game hes missed this season. Gortat, who hurt his back during pregame warmups and left the court wincing, is averaging 12.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. In Washingtons 117-111 overtime loss at Sacramento on Tuesday, Gortat had 19 points and 14 rebounds. The Wizards started Kevin Seraphin in his place. The Wizards are still without forward Nene, who missed his 12th gram because of a sprained left MCL. "Things arent going our way right now," Wall said. "Some guys are down, but there are no excuses. We know we should be 1-1 on this trip right now. Two more games left to put this one behind us. Win the next two, go home even." The Blazers, who opened the season 22-4 and rose to the top of the standings, played without Aldridge for the fourth straight game because of a lower back contusion. He is expected to return when the Blazers play at Charlotte on Saturday. They got a scare against the Wizards when reserve guard Will Barton, who has been a spark off the bench this season, appeared to injure his right arm and left the game for a time. In the second half he wore a brace on his elbow. The Blazers jumped out to a 19-14 lead, but the Wizards answered with a 14-4 run to lead 28-23 after the first quarter. Bradley Beals layup extended the lead to 35-27. The Wizards stayed in front, going up 45-39 on former Blazer Martell Websters dunk. But Lillard dunked with less than a minute to go in the half and Robin Lopez added a layup to tie the game at 51. Lillard added a pair of free throws for a 53-51 Blazers lead at the break. Portland opened the third quarter with an 11-3 run, including 3-pointers from Lillard, Dorell Wright and Matthews, to stretch the lead to 64-53. The Blazers had six 3s in the quarter to head into the final period with an 86-73 lead. Bartons pass between the legs of Drew Gooden was snagged by Thomas Robinson for the jam to make it 89-73. Wright, who has been starting in Aldridges absence, matched his season-high with 15 points. Gooden had 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Washington. NOTES: The Blazers on Thursday announced a $16 million makeover of the Moda Center, including renovation of the arenas suites and a new glass enclosed bar on the upper level that will offer a panoramic view of Portland. The Blazers are also holding a fan contest to redesign the teams court. ... The Blazers have had four straight games with at least 12 3-pointers, a franchise record. ... Paes, of India, and Stepanek, of the Czech Republic, knocked out the Bryan brothers in a three-set semifinal to deny the Americans the chance to become the first mens doubles team in 62 years to win all four majors in the same year.TORONTO -- Mark Buehrle is putting his faith in the fielding of his Toronto Blue Jays teammates and its paying off. "I need defence behind me," Buehrle said. "Its a key. I dont strike out many guys so the ball is put in play." The results showed again for the Blue Jays soft-throwing left-hander who became the first 10-game winner in the major leagues on Sunday in Torontos 4-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals. By working quickly and efficiently, Buehrle pitched eight strong innings and was supported by home runs from Dioner Navarro and Edwin Encarnacion as well as some solid defence. The game was played in a brisk two hours 14 minutes. "Its not luck," Blue Jays right-fielder Jose Bautista said. "Hes pitching great, throwing strikes, keeping people off balance and allowing us a chance to play defence behind him. Its no surprise that every time he pitches there are plenty of good defensive plays made. He keeps everybody engaged in the game because he works quick. Its been awesome to play behind him this year." Buehrle (10-1) held the Royals to six hits and one walk while striking out three to win his sixth straight decision. "I dont know if its one of those things where working fast keeps them on their toes and ready to field stuff," Buehrle said. "I dont if that is the key to it. Again I just try to get the ball and throw it and I know the guys like to play behind you when its a quick game. I need those guys all over the place when Im pitching." Toronto manager John Gibbons thought it was one of Buehrles best performances this season. "Today (Buehrle) was as good as he has been all year," said Gibbons. "He has really been great, seems like every time I come in here you have to describe it the same way. Thats what he does, he keeps you off balance and hits both sides of the plate. Hes a pitcher. ... He topped off a nice home stand for us." Left-hander Aaron Loup took over in the ninth from Buehrle after Encarnacions two-run homer in the eighth had extended the lead to four runs. The Blue Jays (34-24) took the final two games of the four-game series to gain a split with the Royals (26-30) and finish their home stand at 8-2. Toronto has won 21 of their past 28 games to take over first place in the American League East. "(Buehrle) was dynamite," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Hes traditionally tough on us but hes 10-1 now, hes tough on everybody. Hes a master at what he does. He commands the baseball so well, changes speeds off everything he has. He has the ability to read the hitters reaction to the pitch before to know what hes going to throw next. If the hitter is gearing up, he backs off, if the hitter is backing off, he gears up. "He just pitched a phenomennal game.dddddddddddd Hes just really, really good at keeping you off balance." Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (2-5) allowed eight hits and two runs in seven innings to go 10 starts without a win after winning his first two starts of the season. Guthrie allowed two walks and had five strikeouts before he was replaced by right-hander Aaron Crow in the eighth. Navarro hit his third homer of the season with one out in the second to open the scoring. The Blue Jays scored again in the fourth. Juan Francisco led off with a double on a liner that Kansas City right-fielder Norichika Aoki misplayed into a double. Francisco moved to third on a single by Brett Lawrie. He scored when Anthony Gose forced Lawrie at second on a grounder to shortstop. A key defensive play came in the sixth after a slight lapse. Eric Hosmer led off a bloop to centre that turned into a double when the Blue Jays left second uncovered. But shortstop Jose Reyes cut down Hosmer at third after fielding Billy Butlers grounder and Buehrle finished the inning unscathed. "In a two-run game, thats big," Gibbons said. "Thats what good shortstops do, he knew he had no play at first base. ... Ive seen it, too, through my career that the third baseman doesnt always get there, so (third baseman) Francisco was heads up to get there himself." Encarnacion, who hit 16 homers in May to lead the majors, doubled the Blue Jays lead with his 19th homer of the season in the eighth against Crow. It also scored Adam Lind who had singled with one out. Things are also going Buehrles way. In the sixth inning Lorenzo Cains popup to first dropped in fair territory when Encarnacion lost the ball but it rolled foul. Cain then struck out. "He called me off and then said a cuss word in Spanish which was one of the few Spanish words I know," Buehrle said. "Ive got a horseshoe stuck up my rear end pretty far right now so Im not complaining." NOTES: After the game the Blue Jays returned right-handed pitcher Liam Hendriks to triple-A Buffalo on option. A corresponding move will be made on Tuesday. aThe Blue Jays finished May at 21-9. aRoyals recalled third baseman Mike Moustakas from triple-A Omaha for Sundays game and put third baseman Danny Valencia (left hand muscle strain) on the 15-day disabled list. .... The Royals also recalled left-handed reliever Francisley Bueno (left little finger contusion) from his minor-league rehabilitation assignment with Omaha and returned right-handed pitcher Aaron Brooks to triple-A on option. aThe Blue Jays have Monday off before playing a three-game series in Detroit that opens Tuesday with Drew Hutchison (4-3, 3.88 earned-run average) facing Anibal Sanchez (2-2, 2.49 ERA). TORONTO -- Joffrey Lupul could be back soon for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the news wasnt so good regarding Tyler Bozak. Bozak is expected to miss at least 7-10 days with a lower-body injury, coach Randy Carlyle said after the Leafs 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. "With Bozak, hell be a little while here," Carlyle said. "That could get updated here as we go forward until we get a proper assessment." Bozak suffered the injury Friday night in Columbus. He did not play the final eight minutes in the loss to the Blue Jackets and the team announced about an hour before faceoff against the Penguins that the 27-year-old centre would not be in the lineup. Lupul missed the past two games with a bone bruise in his foot, but Carlyle said a CT scan revealed no fracture. The winger is expected to travel with the team on its road trip to Western Canada. "Were hopeful that he will play in Edmonton on Tuesday night," Carlyle said. With Bozak and Lupul out against Pittsburgh, Carter Ashton was called up from the Toronto Marlies and played 11:34. Bozak has three goals and three assists in 11 games this season. Lupul has six goals and four assists in 10 games. Kieran Gibbs Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. Raheem Sterling England Jersey . Val Sweeting, the 26-year-old skip from Vegreville, Alta., knocked off four-time Scotties Winner Jennifer Jones Monday night to claim sole possession of first place at the Canadian Olympic curling trials. But she says her young squad isnt going to drop that underdog moniker just yet. "We still like to think we are," said Sweeting, who curls out of Edmonton with third Joanne Courtney, 24, second Dana Ferguson, 26, and lead Rachelle Pidherny, 27. "Yeah were 3-0 but theres lots of week left and we dont have a playoff spot or anything like that yet." Sweeting was down three early but evened things up in six and stole seven points en route to a convincing 9-6 win over Jones. Jones, who entered the game in a tie for first with Sweeting, now sits in second at 2-1 along with fellow Winnipeg skip Chelsea Carey, who knocked off Ottawas Rachel Homan 9-8. "We just missed a couple of bad shots and lost control of the game," said Jones, who is trying to claim the one prize that has eluded her team, the right to represent Canada at the Olympics. "We battled back and won one today, this morning and kind of let one slip away tonight but well come beck sharper tomorrow." In the morning, Jones needed an extra end to finish off Middaugh. Homan and the rest of the womens field sit at 1-2. Saskatoons Stefanie Lawton picked up her first win 8-6 over Renee Sonnenberg of Grande Prairie, Alta., and Edmontons Heather Nedohin also picked up her first win 6-3 over Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont. Jones took an early 3-0 lead against Sweeting but got in trouble in the fourth end and then was heavy on a draw letting Sweeting to steal a crushing four in the seventh end. On the mens side, Jeff Stoughton made a great shot to tie their game but it wasnt enough as Kevin Martin extended his winning streak to two games. That puts Stoughton in a must-win situation for the rest of thhe tournament.dddddddddddd "Wasnt that something... youre just never safe," Martin said of Stoughtons shot, minutes after the Edmonton skips single in the 10th made it 6-5. "We had to make it a tough double and of course he made an incredible double and made it a close game." Brad Jacobs and John Morris also stayed undefeated. Morris, Martins former third, is curling with B.C.s Jim Cotter and he beat Calgarys Kevin Koe 6-4 and Jacobs, out of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., downed Winnipegs Mike McEwan 7-5. Glenn Howard, out of Coldwater, also beat fellow Ontario skip John Epping of Toronto 9-5, which left both at 1-1. The almost 6,000 at the MTS Centre had lots to cheer about as Stoughton made a difficult double off one of Martins stones to score three in the ninth. He missed another, perhaps even more difficult, multiple takeout in the sixth that could have given him four but he had to settle for one. Stoughton knows he has no more room left to lose another game, with all agreeing a record of 5-2 is probably a must to make the playoffs. "I would think so. Its not where we wanted to be after two games," he said. "Weve played worse and won." He has already said this will be the last time he tries to win a spot on the Olympic team. "Theres five games left . . Were not out of this by any means." Martin agreed that losing more than two looks like elimination. "Five and two is safe, four and three I dont think ever has been." Jacobs was enjoying the moment as well. "Its a seven-game round robin so every win is huge. You feel great to be at 2-0. You wouldnt want to be 0-2," he said. The Manitoba Curling Association and the province also announced Monday that curling is joining the CFLs Winnipeg Blue Bombers and NHLs Jets with a specialty license plate of its own, and part of the proceeds will go to the associations Curling for Life Endowment Fund. Raptors Top Five: Best point guards With the Toronto Raptors celebrating their 20th anniversary season in 2014-15, Josh Lewenberg and TSN.ca take a look back at the franchises first two decades with weekly Top Five lists, counting down the standout and signature players and moments in team history. 5. T.J. Ford (2006-08) Raptor stats (2 seasons): 13.2 points, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, 126 games played/97 started One of the first orders of business for incoming general manager Bryan Colangelo, upon taking the helm prior to the 2006-07 campaign, was to shore up the point guard position. Although his initial gamble - the selection of Andrea Bargnani, first overall - will go down as a black mark on the former GMs resume, he would hit a home run just two days later, acquiring the speedy Ford from Milwaukee and selling high on then-rookie sensation Charlie Villanueva. Ford made an immediate impact, averaging 14.0 points and a personal-best 7.9 assists, helping to lead the franchise to its first division title in his debut year with the Raptors. Listed at a generous six-feet, Ford was a fearless player - its what made him great and loads of fun to watch before it ultimately ended his career early. Not unlike his time in the league, Fords Raptor tenure was short lived, derailed by serious neck and spinal injuries. He shares a common thread with others on this list in the way he fought through that adversity - refusing to compromise his style of play - but doesnt get the same recognition for it. Did you know?: Ford assisted on 44.6 per cent of his teammates field goals while on the floor as a member of the Raptors, the highest mark in franchise history. 4. Jose Calderon (2005-13) Raptor stats (8 seasons): 10.0 points, 7.2 assists, 1.7 turnovers, 48 per cent FG, 39 percent 3P, 525 games played/323 started More so than anyone else on this list, Calderon is the type of player that comes to mind when you think of the throw-back point guard, a dying breed in basketball. A truly selfless leader, the Spaniard remains a consummate professional and teammate, now with his third team in two years since being traded in the deal that netted the Raptors Rudy Gay. His NBA home will always be in Toronto, where he spent nearly a decade and grew into one of the more dependable floor generals in the league. When Calderon debuted in 2005 he could barely speak the language or knock down an open jumper (16 per cent from three-point range). Thanks in large part to the work he put in over the years that followed, he would go on to lead the NBA, shooting a ridiculous 46 per cent from long distance in 2012-13, his final season in Toronto. Routinely at the top of the association in assist-to-turnover ratio, Calderons near-flawless instincts on the offensive end helped him overtake a number of flashier point guards in the rotation, including Ford, leading to the latters departure. Underestimate him at your own peril. Defensive shortcomings aside, Calderon had a lasting impact on the franchise and wont soon by forgotten. Did you know?: Calderon ranks third in Raptors history in win shares (an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player) at 41.5, behind only Chris Bosh and Vince Carter. Hes the Raptors all-time leader in assists (3770) 3. Alvin Williams (1998-2006) Raptor stats (8 seasons): 9.3 points, 4.3 assists, 1.4 turnovers, 417 games played/324 started To clarify, while Williams remains one of, if not the most beloved Raptor of all time, hes here because of his on-court contributions and overall importance to the franchise. No, his numbers dont stand out, theyre modest at best. That said, Boogie peaked at the right time and came into his own just as the Raptors reached their pinnacle - not a coincidence. An excellent defender and clutch shooter, Williams was the perfect sidekick to Carter in the backcourt. He broke out as a reserve in 2000-01, prompting his promotion and the midseason trade of Mark Jackson before hitting the biggest shot of his career - and possibly Raptors history - in the playoffs, a series-winning dagger at Madison Square Garden. The following season he played in all 82 games, averaging 11.8 points and 5.7 assists, helping lead Toronto to an unexpected playoff berth without the injured Carter to lean on. More than anything else, Williams is known for his toughness. That and his crucial role in the franchises biggest moments make him deserving of this spot. Did you know?: Williams has appeared in 18 playoff games for the Raptors, tied with Morris Peterson for most in team history. 2. Damon Stoudamire (1995-98) Raptor stats (3 seasons): 19.6 points, 8.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 200 games played/200 started An original Raptor, Stoudamire was also the franchises first ever star, and a marketable one at that. He burst onto the scene as a rookie in 1995-96, the teams inaugural season, averaging 19.0 points and 9.3 assists. The lone bright spot during the organizations early years, Mighty Mouse intrigued a young fan base with his crafty, fast-paced style of play and was at the forefront of some signature moments, namely Torontos unlikely victory over Michael Jordan and the 72-win Chicago Bulls. At 5-foot-10, Stoudamire could do the unimaginable. He was durable, lightning quick and like Williams - a player he was ultimately traded for - tough as nails. Alas, the relationship between player and franchise turned sour and Stoudamires production proved to be unsustainable once he engineered his own exit and moved on from the Raptors. You could certainly argue he was nothing more than a good player putting up great numbers on a bad team, but that shouldnt tarnish his Raptors legacy. For the first two and a half years of their existence, the Raptors featured one of the most exciting young talents in the NBA, an ideal set-up for any infant franchise. Did you know?: Stoudamire logged an average of 40.9 minutes per game in his rookie season, the seventh-highest among first-year players in NBA history. The six players ahead of him (Wilt Chamberlain, Elvin Hayes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Walt Bellamy and Jerry Lucas) are all Hall of Famers. Hes also the Raptors all-time leader in assists per game (8.8) 1. Kyle Lowry (2012-present) Raptor stats (2 seasons): 15.0 points, 6.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 147 games played/131 started Lowrys all-star caliber 2013-14 campaign will go down as one of the most impressive single-season performances by any player, at any position in the franchises first 20 years. After a disappointing debut season in Toronto and a series of lost years in Houston and Memphis, the 28-year-old finally realized his immense potential, finding himself at the most crucial time for both player and team. With free agency looming, Lowrys maturation as a leader - on and off the court - lifted his team to new heights at a time in which many expected them to head in the opposite direction. By channeling his toughness and stubborn nature in the right direction, he established himself as the face of the franchise - now and for the foreseeable future - and one of the NBAs elite point guards. Perhaps his most meaningful contribution to the organization occurred this summer when he bucked the trend of runaway stars and committed to Toronto long-term. Lowry - a two-way terror at the position - has spearheaded a Raptors renaissance, rejuvenating a long-suffering fan base entering the teams 20th season. Did you know?: Lowry set a franchise-record with 190 three-point field goals last season. His 11.7 win shares represented the third highest single-season mark in team history, behind only Carter. Honourable mention: Mike James (2005-06), Rafer Alston (2002-03, 2004-05), Muggsy Bogues (1999-2001), Mark Jackson (2000-01) Expert picks: Jack Armstrong 1. Alvin Williams 2. Jose Calderon 3. PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby is returning to new linemates and a new role with the NHLs hottest team. But Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma still expects to see the Crosby of old despite his current 40-game layoff and the 102 games the star forward has missed over two seasons because of concussion-related issues. Crosby, out since Dec. 5, announced Tuesday he will play Thursday night against the Rangers in New York. You can watch the game live on TSN2 and TSN Mobile TV at 7pm et/4pm pt and follow along on TSN.cas Game Night Blog. The Penguins, riding a nine-game winning streak, are four points behind New York in the race to be the top-seeded Eastern Conference team in the playoffs. What already was a marquee game for the NHL just got even bigger. Much bigger. "I think its unrealistic that hes going to step into Madison Square Garden and be the only show on the ice," Bylsma said. "But I know how the guy plays. I know how fast he is going to go. I know whats going to happen when he has the puck with speed. You know how hes going to be able to play down low with the puck, and you expect to see that player step on the ice. Thats a really good hockey player. Thats the best hockey player in the world." Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin arguably has been that player with Crosby out, piling up a league-high 84 points. Now, Crosby is coming back at a key point in the season, with 14 games remaining for Pittsburgh and the playoff race still undecided. "I know Geno is excited to be on the same ice with Sid again," Bylsma said of Malkin. "I still think its a great challenge for our team. Were not a shoo-in to be a really good team when they all come back." Crosby admittedly feels better than he did when he returned nearly four months ago after missing the final 41 games of last season and the first 20 games this season. He dazzled the New York Islanders with a two-goal, four point night on Nov. 21, but he didnt have another goal in the other seven games he played before the concussion symptoms returned following a physical Dec. 5 game against Boston. This time, general manager Ray Shero said, "He feels better than last time and knows what to expect this time." "I probably feel a little bit better just knowing what to expect," Crosby said. "I think its easier going through it this time. I know what to expect. That first game was pretty overwhelming. It was a lot of fun, but that being said Ill take it more in stride this time and make sure Im getting better with every gamme.dddddddddddd." After being cleared for contact last week, Crosby weighed whether to return Sunday against the Bruins, only to decide that he hadnt had enough contact to play in a game so late in the regular season. Defenceman Kris Letang, a key to the Penguins much-improved power play, also could play Thursday. He has missed five games with concussion-like symptoms, but was cleared to practice Tuesday. "As a player you definitely get excited when you see guys starting to come back," defenceman Paul Martin said. "You definitely get a good feeling." Crosby got plenty of work Tuesday, skating on the third line with Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy and playing the point on the power play. Moving Crosby, an expert passer, to the point allows Malkin to remain on the half-wall, where he has been effective. For now, Bylsma plans to keep intact his productive top two lines of Chris Kunitz-Malkin-James Neal and Steve Sullivan-Jordan Staal-Pascal Dupuis. Still, Bylsma also plans to put Crosby and Malkin together at times and also slot Crosby and Staal together, a unit previously unseen. "Im pretty sure Ill end up with them (Cooke and Kennedy)," Crosby said. "I wouldnt see coach putting me with a different pairing after missing this much time. Im sure hes trying to get guys used to playing with one another. In any game, different line combinations are common, but for the most part thats who Ill be with." During a layoff that saw multiple visits to specialists other than those who have been treating him in Pittsburgh, Crosby was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury in his neck. Crosby believes this diagnosis, and the subsequent treatment, helped get him back on the ice again. The concussion issues have left the NHL without its best-known player for all but eight games in the last 15 months. Crosby was enjoying the best season of his already exceptional career in 2010-11, with 32 goals and 66 points in 41 games, until hard hits in successive games Jan. 1 and 5, 2011, sidelined him for the rest of the season. Without Crosby, the Penguins had a 106-point season but were eliminated by Tampa Bay in the first round of the playoffs. Crosby would have as many as 14 regular-season games remaining before the playoffs if he gets through the rest of the schedule without any further problems. Initially, Bylsma plans to limit Crosby to 14-15 minutes a game, although he knows that could prove difficult. "You dont pace Sidney Crosby," he said. CALGARY - Chris Driedger stopped 30 shots as the Calgary Hitmen edged the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 on Sunday in Western Hockey League action. Jake Virtanen scored the eventual winner for the Hitmen (12-6-4) in the second period and assisted on Kenton Helgesens goal in the first. Pavel Padakin scored the other goal for Calgary. LONDON -- The WTA has announced that Serena Williams is guaranteed to finish the year as the world No. 1 player for the third time. This season she has lost only four singles so far. Williams, who also finished the year on top in 2002 and 2009, has won nine WTA titles this season including the French Open and U.S. Open. The 32-year-old Williams returned to the No. 1 spot in February, when she became the oldest player to top the rankings. She is the seventh player to finish at least three seasons at No. 1, alongside Steffi Graf (eight times), Martina Navratilova (seven times), Chris Evert (five times), Lindsay Davenport (four times), Justine Henin (three times) and Martina Hingis (three times). MORITZ, Switzerland - Exceeding expectations in her comeback season, Lindsey Vonn now heads to her hometown world championships injury-free and winning races in style.TORONTO - With the pressure of last nights season opener behind him and the swarm of media beginning to thin out after practice Thursday afternoon, DeMar DeRozan took some time to rank the Raptors most comedic players. First up on his list, after explicably giving himself the top spot, was the jovial Amir Johnson. Okay, no surprise there. Yall know Amir like we know him, said DeRozan. Hes funny as [expletive]. [If] you hang around with Amir all day, youre going to have the time of your life. He dont try to be that funny, but hes that funny. The next name he mentioned would raise a few eyebrows. Tyler Hansbrough. Hes another one thats funny as [expletive], DeRozan boasted, to our surprise. Hes a comedian. It dont seem like he is. Hes top three funniest dudes on the team, by far. Seriously. Trust me. A lot of people dont get to see his full personality, but Tyler is just… Tyler. Who is Tyler? After a full year spent in Toronto, hes still a bit of a mystery, at least to those who dont see him behind the closed doors of the locker room. On the floor, he brought his trademark energy and physicality, but often tried to do too much, searching for an identity and misinterpreting his role. Off it, he seemed quiet, introverted. Before and after games, he would mostly keep to himself. But there appears to be more to Hansbrough than meets the eye, evident in his mindful and reflective conversation with TSN.ca and The Globe and Mail on Thursday. The 28-year-old forward has been something of a revelation this fall, overlooked in a Raptors training camp filled with feel-good stories. In addition to extending his range beyond the three-point line, Hansbrough came back to work with a new, more easygoing mindset. It has not gone unnoticed in the gym. Theres just so many focus things that Tyler is doing now that are very noticeable to the coaching staff and I think its off the charts, said coach Dwane Casey, who has been raving about Hansbrough, a player quickly rising in his rotational hierarchy. Hes more comfortable, hes opened up a little bit, hes relaxed. Hes more familiar with what were doing. Hansbrough signed with the Raptors in the summer of 2013, expecting to play a prominent role off Caseys bench. He was logging nearly 20 minutes per game in November before an early-season trade welcomed Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes to Toronto, relegating Hansbrough to situational duty and mop-up minutes for the duration of the year. His role going into this season, the final on his contract, looked to be just as cloudy. For me personally, obviously, everyone wants to play, he said. So I think thats something that drove me to work as hard as I did in the off-season. The former Tar Heels star and the 2009 13th-overall pick says he put in more work this summer than ever before. Thanks in part to his experience on the bench last season and the advice of Torontos coaches, he was beginning to realize that his previously one-dimensional skill set - and reluctance to accept it - would eventually make him obsolete in an evolving NBA. So he vowed to evolve along with it. I think the league is getting smaller and smaller and teams like to be able to spread the court, he recognized. A lot of teams are having a big and four players around him just to be able to spread the floor. I think to be in the league, eventually all power forwards are going to have to be able to shoot. So, he enlisted the help of a shooting coach, reworked his mechanics and shot threes. A lot of them. Daily. He would focus primarily on launchinng them from the corners, understood to be one of the most efficient shots in basketball.dddddddddddd Im about as confident as you can be in the corner, he said. So yeah, definitely, if Im left open Ill definitely shoot it. Hansbrough, 0-for-12 from long distance in his first five seasons, made two of his four attempts during exhibition. More than being able to make them, Casey has credited him for knowing when to take them. His newfound restraint and acceptance of a complimentary role is the biggest reason hes back in the coachs good graces. I think a lot of it is he didnt understand last year, more so, Casey said. He felt like that was the way he could contribute. No fault to him, I think most new guys feel like they have to score to contribute but, I think hes figured out now - if I screen, if I rebound, if I defend, thats helping the team and thats going to help me get more time. Everybody wants to go and improve as a basketball player, but you have to know what you need to do to be on the court to help the team, said Hansbrough, who averaged 8.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in four seasons with the Pacers before coming to Toronto. So talking with the coaching staff, theres some things that we went over that I can improve on. Definitely my shot, but I spent more time on kind of studying and seeing the things I can do when Im on the court. In Wednesdays season opener, Hansbrough was the first player off Caseys bench, called upon early after Jonas Valanciunas picked up two quick fouls. Of Torontos reserves, only Patterson logged more than his 20 minutes. As promised, he proved that less is more. He attempted just two shots, making both and harnessed his effort on the defensive end, where whe battled All-Stars, Paul Millsap and Al Horford. While Patterson will likely be the first big off the pine on most nights, Hansbrough should continue to play a role, acting as the back-up centre in smaller lineups, assuming he maintains his recent progress. Thats all hes looking for - a chance to play, a chance to contribute to a winning team. Its taken some time to come to terms with the reality - hes not going to replicate the record-breaking numbers he put up at the collegiate level, not in the NBA. Instead, hes had to adapt. He was willing to do so this summer, more than ever. It was definitely changing some things up, but I think the big thing is really being open to change, he admitted. Not having a hard mind about doing things differently and accepting you need to improve on some things. Mentally, the adjustment has been more challenging than most players, certainly most people, could identify with. Hansbrough was a special player at North Carolina. A national champion, ACC Player of the Year, three-time consensus All-American. He often relied on brute force to make an impact in Indiana. Hes always been a physical player, sometimes to a downfall, he pointed out. His career hasnt exactly unfolded the way he might have expected it to, but he doesnt sound like a man with regrets. He probably wouldnt have imagined that hed be taking a step back in order to take a step forward heading into his sixth year in the league, but hes proud of the changes hes made to his game. I wish I would have made them sooner, he said. Everybody has big aspirations. But Im glad to be here, where I am right now. I love my teammates. I really couldnt be in a better situation. I feel like we just keep improving and improving. Im on a great team with a lot of guys I like, so thats pretty special, especially in the NBA. Calgary grabbed a league-leading 10 spots on the western squad as the division all-star teams were announced Wednesday. Rays numbers were held back as he missed six games to injury and sat out the last game of the season. But he still finished with 234 completed passes out of 303 tries for a career high 77.2 per cent, tops among CFL starting quarterbacks. Durant finished the season with 4,154 passing yards and a league-leading 31 touchdown strikes. Saskatchewan and Montreal were tied with nine selections each. Toronto was next at eight, with Hamilton and B.C. at six each, Winnipeg at four and Edmonton at two. Representing the West at running back is Calgarys Jon Cornish, the CFL rushing leader, and Saskatchewans Kory Sheets, the runner-up. Hamiltons C.J. Gable and Winnipegs Will Ford share the honour in the East. Sheets and Cornish were both unanimous selections. Torontos Chad Owens was one of the four receivers named in the East and Edmontons Fred Stamps was a unanimous pick as one of the four in the West, after leading the league with 1,259 receiving yards. The others were Torontos Andre Durie, Hamiltons Bakari Grant, Montreals S.J. Green, Saskatchewans Weston Dressler and Chris Getzlaf and Calgarys Marquay McDaniel. The offensive lineman named for the East were Montreals Josh Bourke, Winnipegs Glenn January, Torontos Chris Van Zeyl and Jeff Keeping and Hamiltons Greg Wojt. For the West it was Calgarys Brett Jones, Jon Gott and Stanley Bryant, B.C.s Jovan Olafioye and Saskatchewans Brendon Labatte. For January, a seven-year CFL veteran who has made the East all-star squad three times now, the honour was bittersweet after the Bombers finished last at 3-15, tied for their worst record ever in the 18-game CFL. "It was an extremely difficult season forr us and I think its been well documened that a lot of are frustrated that the season went the way it did," he said.dddddddddddd "Its nice to have individual acknowledgment but I sure wish I was playing this weekend." Defensive players include CFL tackle leader Chip Cox from Montreal and runner-up Henoc Muamba from Winnipeg in the East, and sack-leader Charleston Hughes from Calgary and Saskatchewans Alex Hall in the West. Muamba said terrible season or not, the fact that four Bombers made the all-star list helps show that the team never gave up. "Its a testament to the fact that myself personally, I didnt quit, and for the rest of the all-stars. It goes to prove that there were a lot of guys in that room that never quit, despite the things that were going on and the season that we had." He also sounded a little more positive at the prospect of returning to the Bombers, although he said his agent is still in negotiations with the team. Six of Montreals all-star selections were on defence. Besides Cox, John Bowman, Geoff Tisdale, Jerald Brown, Billy Parker and Mike Edem were named. Torontos Khalif Mitchell and Patrick Watkins, Winnipegs Bryant Turner and Hamiltons Brandon Boudreaux complete the defence for the East. In the West it was Saskatchewans Tearrius George, Dwight Anderson and Tyron Brackenridge; B.C.s Adam Bighill, Solomon Elimimian, Cord Parks, Dante Marsh and Ryan Phillips; Calgarys Juwan Simpson and Edmontons Almondo Sewell. Calgary swept the special teams category in the West with league-leading kicker Rene Paredes, punter Rob Maver and the CFLs leader in combined return yards, Larry Taylor. Hamilton claimed two spots in the East for punter Josh Bartel and tackle-leader Marc Beswick, while Montreals Sean Whyte took kicker. TAMPA, Fla. -- Tyler Johnson stole the spotlight in a matchup of two top rookies. Johnson scored three goals to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. With the Lightning leading 3-2, Johnson doubled the advantage with 5:22 remaining and then completed his first career hat trick less than 2 1/2 minutes later. The centre has 16 goals this season. Colorados Nathan MacKinnon, who entered leading all rookies with 17 goals, had an assist. "Fairly decent timing on Tylers part to net three in this game," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "He was on it tonight." Mark Barberio and Valtteri Filppula also scored for the Lightning. Martin St. Louis extended his point streak to 10 games with an assist on Johnsons second goal. "Its one of those things that you have to get lucky to get," Johnson said. Tampa Bay defenceman Victor Hedman had three assists for the second consecutive game. John Mitchell and Tyson Barrie scored in the second period for Colorado. Sami Aittokallio made his first start this season and second of his career filling in for injured Colorado backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere (back). Playing three times in four days, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy had planned to give Semyon Varlamov, who made 34 saves in Fridays 3-2 win at Florida, the night off. Varlamov replaced Aittokallio, who gave up three goals on 18 shots, to start the third period. "Its not easy for him, and I certainly understand that," Roy said. "But at the same time, I thought we had some momentum and it was the call to make at that moment. If I had a crystal ball, yes, I would have kept him there." Aittokallio, recalled from Lake Erie of the AHL Friday, made his first career appearance in a start last April 11 at Los Angeles, a game in which he left in the third period due to leg cramps. Johnson opened the scoring at 7:15 of the second period, Barberio made it 2-0 about 1 1/2 minutes later when his shot from the top of the right circle deflected off a Colorado defender and past Aittokallio. Filppula completed Tampa Bays three-goal period with just under 2 minutes to go. "He played a good game," Roy said of Johnson. "Thats all Im going to say." Mitchell got the Avalanche on the scoreboard when his redirection eluded Ben Bishop with 1:27 left in the second and Barrie scored 30 seconds later to pull Colorado within one. "We gave ourselves a real opportunity," Mitchell said. "We ran out of time in the second period. If we had a little bit more time on the clock, we had all the momentum going our way. Give credit to them, they came out and played a solid third period." MacKinnon had one shot, won 55 per cent of his faceoffs, and was plus-1. "I cant believe hes 18," Cooper said. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Red Wings coach Mike Babcock will enjoy the win more than the milestone for now. As special as it was to pass Jack Adams franchise win total, making the playoffs is the more immediate priority. Darren Helm scored the go-ahead goal 3:33 into the third period to spark a three-goal outburst and inch Detroit to the cusp of clinching a playoff berth following a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. "The win tonight is way more important than that," Babcock said, when asked about the significance of earning his 414th career victory, one more than Adams. "But what I would say to you is these are things you think about the summer. And Im thrilled." Babcock then shifted his attention to his teams next test. The Red Wings (38-27-14) travel to play Pittsburgh on Wednesday needing only one point to secure one of the Eastern Conferences two wild-card playoff spots, and extend the teams run of post-season berths to 23 straight seasons. "I know weve got a game in Pittsburgh tomorrow. Were going to enjoy this tonight," Babcock said, noting the game at Pittsburgh could potentially be a first-round playoff preview. "The reality is, its an important game tomorrow." Brendan Smith, David Legwand and Pavel Datsyuk, into an empty net, also scored for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard made 25 saves in a game the Red Wings rallied back after spotting the Sabres a 1-0 lead. Zemgus Girgensons scored both goals for the Sabres (21-49-9), who are already guaranteed of finishing in last place once the season ends on Sunday. The Red Wings continued their domination of Buffalo. Theyve won eight straight since a 6-2 loss on Oct. 13, 2009, and improved to 23-2-1-1 against Buffalo since March 27, 1996, according to STATS. "Its one good step in the right direction," Howard said. "Weve got to find a way to get a point or two points there tomorrow and keep it rolling, because you want to feel good going into the playoffs." Howard did his part in stopping several shots to keep the game tied at 1 during a Sabres two-man advantage that spanned 1:51 in the second period. His best stops came on bang-bang chances. After turning aside Cody Hodgsons hard shot from the left circle, Howard kicked out his right pad to foil Rasmus Ristolainens attempt to convert the rebound. Sabres coach Ted Nolan said coming up empty on the power play changed the games momentum. "When you play a good team like Detroit, they know how to close deals. We have a 5-on-3 with a chance to go ahead, we dont do it, and thats what happens," Nolan said. "You look at the things we didnt do right." The Red Wings found their groove to start the third. Helm started the play that led to his go-ahead goal by winning a faceoff to the left of the Sabres net. He drew the puck back to Kyle Quincey, whose shot from the left point was deflected on its way to the net. Matt Hackett made the initial stop, but was unable to control the rebound, which squirted through a crowd of players in front. Helm gathered up the loose puck and took a few steps to his right, where he snapped it into the open side before Hackett had time to recover. Legwand then made it 3-1 to seal the win by beating Hackett through the legs with 4:14 remaining. Girgensons made it close 2:03 later by capping a great individual rush, in which he got between two defenders and roofed a shot over Howards right shoulder. NOTES: The Sabres called up G Andrey Makarov from AHL Rochester to serve as the backup. He became the eighth goalie to dress for at least one game this season, including Ryan Vinz, a Sabres HarborCenter employee who backed up Jhonas Enroth the day Ryan Miller was traded to St. Louis. ... Red Wings RW Daniel Alfredssons assist on Smiths goal upped career total to 712, tying him with Jean Beliveau and Scott Stevens for 48th on NHL list. ... Sabres RW Chris Stewart returned after missing 16 games with a lower body injury, while D Christian Ehrhoff -- nicknamed "Ear-Hoff" by his teammates -- played two days after requiring numerous stitches to close a gash in his right ear, which was struck by a puck. The Boston Bruins begin their Eastern Conference title defence against an Original Six rival, as they host Game 1 of a best-of-seven series Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings. Catch the game on TSN and TSN GO starting at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Considering the Bruins and Red Wings played in opposite conferences for decades, this playoff meeting is a rare treat for NHL fans. In fact, the last time these Original Six foes met in the postseason was in 1957 when neither clubs current coaches were born yet. Boston and Detroit have met seven times in the playoffs with the Bruins taking four of those encounters, including the 1957 semifinal round matchup. The Red Wings, however, have won three straight in the regular season against Boston and seven of the previous eight encounters. Bostons only victory in the 2013-14 season series was a 4-1 home win back on Oct. 5, while Detroit beat the Bruins as recently as April 2, when it picked up a 3-2 regulation win in the Motor City. Still, heading into the opening round of the playoffs the Bruins are once again the team to beat in the Eastern Conference and perhaps the entire NHL. Boston, which in 2011 won its first Stanley Cup since the days of Bobby Orr, is not only the defending East champions, but it also enters this postseason as winners of the 2013-14 Presidents Trophy. The clubs 117 points were the most gained by the franchise since 1971-72 (119 pts) and Boston finished as the top team in the regular season for the first time since 1989-90. Despite heading into the postseason with a ton of confidence, the Bruins know they cant afford to look past their first-round opponent. Boston made it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in three seasons last spring, but before it fell in six games to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Bruins nearly lost in the first round to Toronto. The Bruins blew a 3-1 series lead against the Maple Leafs and needed to overcome a 4-1 third-period deficit in Game 7 to get past Toronto. It marked fourth straight Boston was a fourth seed in last springs matchup with Toronto, but the Bs shouldnt expect their No. 1 standing in the East to instill fear in the Detroit Red Wings this time around. It marked the third straight spring Boston went seven games in the first round. The Bruins beat Montreal four games to three in 2011 en route to its Stanley Cup title, but lost in seven the following season against Washington. "I dont know, it just seems to be the biggest battle for us and the hardest one to get through," Bruins forward Milan Lucic said of his clubs tendency to play long opening-round series. "I dont think its going to be any different heading into this series. So weve got to be prepared to bring our best because you talk about the last three years, you know the other team hasnt taken us lightly at all and theyve given us their best." Boston is known best as a big, physical team that is really tough to score against, but the club made considerable strides in the offensive end in 2013-14. The Bruins averaged just 2.62 goals per game during the lockout- shortened season before upping that scoring rate to 2.96 gpg in the 2013 playoffs. This season, Boston is third in the NHL with 3.15 gpg through 82 games and hopes to maintain that goal-scoring clip in the upcoming playoffs. Six Boston forwards finished the season with over 50 points this season. Leading the way on offense were David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron, the clubs top two centermen. Krejci dished out a club-best 50 assists to help him pace the Bs with 69 points, while Bergeron had 62 points and tied winger Jarome Iginla for the club lead with 30 goals. While Bostons forwards contribute to their clubs overall stinginess on defense, immense blueliner Zdeno Chara and steady goaltender Tuukka Rask get most of the credit. Rask is coming off a Vezina-caliber season, going 36-15-6 with a 2.04 goals against average and .930 save percentage. The 27-year-old Finn is looking to follow up his award-worthy campaign with another strong postseason. Rask was the anchor for Bostons run to the Cup Finals last spring, recording a 1.88 GAA and .940 save percentage in 22 playoff games. The 6-foot-9 Chara is a unique talent who combines size and skill to create havoc at both ends of the ice. The 2008-09 Norris Trophy winner has a booming slap shot and recorded 17 goals and 40 points over 77 games this season and Bostons captain has racked up 54 points (13 goals, 41 assists) over 129 career playoff games. The Red Wings may have moved from the Western Conference to the East prior to the 2013-14 campaign, but the end result was the same as Detroit qualified for the playoffs for a 23rd straight season. On paper, Detroit doesnt match up well with the mighty Bruins but the club doesnt figure to be an easy out so long as Mike Babcock is behind the bench. Babcock has been to the Cup Finals three times as a coach, winning it with Detroit in 2008, and also has led Team Canada to Olympic gold medals at the last two Winter Games. Last spring, the coach helped the seventh-seeded Red Wings eliminate the Pacific Division champion Anaheim Ducks in the first round. He also had the eventual Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on the ropes in Round 2, but the Hawks won three straight to oust Detroit in seven games. This season, Babcock guided his club to the playoffs despite the club dealing with considerable injury problems all along the way. Detroit enters the playoffs reasonably healthy compared to other points of the season, but the club will begin the first round without captain Henrik Zetterberg (back surgery), fellow forwards Dan Cleary (sprained knee) Stephen Weiss (sports hernia surgery) and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (finger surgery). Star forward Pavel Datsyuk also was limited to only 45 games this season, but he returned to the lineup earlier this month and is ready to go for Round 1. The Russian has amassed 103 points (36g, 67a) over 140 career playoff games. Faced with injuries to numerous key veterans, young forwards Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar stepped up for the Red Wings in a big way down the stretch. That was particularly true of the 24-year-old Nyquist, who led Detroit with 28 goals this season in just 57 games. Nyquist has two goals and three assists over 18 career playoff games, but he could be ready for a breakout postseason after showing Babcock and the hockey world what he can do with increased playing time. Tatar, 23, added 19 goals and 20 assists in 73 games for the Red Wings this season. However, the young Slovakian winger has never skated in an NHL playoff game. As a whole, Detroits offense ranked 16th in the league this season with just 2.65 gpg. Niklas Kronwall is the clear No. 1 defenseman for Detroit in front of No. 1 goaltender Jimmy Howard. Kronwall has done a superb job of replacing fellow Swede Nicklas Lidstrom in that role. Lidstrom, of course, retired following the 2011-12 season, leaving seven Norris Trophy wins and a Hall of Fame legacy behind him. Kronwall led Detroit in average ice time with 24 minutes, 18 seconds of action a game. His 49 points (8g, 41a) more than doubled the offensive output of the clubs next- best defenseman Danny DeKeyser, who had 23 points on four goals and 19 assists. Howard, meanwhile, is coming off a mediocre regular season that saw him go 21-19-11 with a 2.66 GAA and .910 save percentage. The 30-year-old American had posted a 2.13 GAA in each of the previous two seasons and his save percentage was .920 or better in both campaigns. Over 42 career playoff games, Howard has compiled a 2.57 GAA and .918 save percentage. The injured Zetterberg led the Red Wings with three goals during the season series, while Tatar had two goals and two assists. Nyquist added two goals and a helper, while Howard was 1-1-0 with a 3.00 GAA. Rask struggled to a 1-3-0 record and 3.29 GAA in four games versus Detroit, while no Boston player had more than one goal in the series. Reilly Smith led the Bruins with four points -- all assists -- in four games. Boston, which also will host Detroit in Game 2 on Sunday, was an impressive 31-7-3 as the home team this season. The Red Wings were 21-15-5 on the road. NASHVILLE -- Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne is expected to start Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins in his return from a hip injury that has limited him to only nine games this season. The Predators recalled Rinne from a two-game conditioning assignment Monday and announced that he would start the Penguins game. "Its a blast to be back playing and feeling good," Rinne said. "I think thats the main thing. Absolutely, Im just super excited." Rinne, who hasnt played in an NHL game since Oct. 22, stopped 33 of 35 shots for a .946 save percentage during his two-game stint with the AHLs Milwaukee Admirals. "Its not in the same level -- the AHL and NHL -- theres a little bit of a gap between," Rinne said. "But still, that was the whole purpose of that trip, just to feel comfortable again, get some games and get that game conditioning going again." Rinne, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist, has been recovering from an E. coli infection in his surgically repaired left hip. In his last five games before the injury, Rinne went 3-1-1 with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage. The 31-year-old Rinne is returning as the Predators make a late-season bid for one of the Western Conferences eight playoff spots. The Predators are 12th in the Western Conference standings with 62 points. The Dallas Stars, Winnipeg Jets and Vancouver Canucks are tied for eighth with 66 points. "You cant just throw a guy in there and expect him to be the saviour," Predators coach Barry Trotz said. "But just getting him back playing is a great boost because you know the type of player that he is, the type of person he is and what he can mean to our hockey team, not only this year but the next year and the following years." The Predators also placed goaltender Devan Dubnyk on waivers Monday. The 27-year-old Dubnyk has played 32 games for the Edmonton Oilers and two games with the Predators this season. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Looking back, Bobby Petrino said the first of his many mistakes in recent years was leaving Louisville, which provided the first of several head coaching opportunities on the college and professional levels. Upon returning Thursday to the Cardinals after seven years, Petrino promised his second stint would be permanent because this was always his destination -- even with collegiate stops at Arkansas and Western Kentucky and a 13-game foray with the NFLs Atlanta Falcons. Petrino returns to a Louisville program that has changed a lot since he left, one thats gearing up to join the Atlantic Coast Conference next season with a home game against newly-crowned champion Florida State. The coach insisted that hes a changed person as well as he enters the next -- and hopefully final -- stop in his career. "Its great to be back home," Petrino said during a sometimes-emotional news conference. "Its really unbelievable to get the opportunity to come back here. For (wife) Becky, and (children) Nick and Bobby and Katie, this is our home and were excited to be able to come back." Petrino coached Western Kentucky to an 8-4 record last season in his only year with the team. He led the Cardinals to a 41-9 mark from 2003-06 including a BCS Orange Bowl victory his final season. He succeeds Charlie Strong, who left last weekend after four years to accept the Texas job. Petrino inherits a team coming off a 12-1 finish and is 23-3 the past two seasons with two bowl wins. Petrino received a seven-year contract with a base annual salary of $3.5 million. It includes a $10 million buyout for leaving that decreases after four years. But the well-travelled coach said that will not be necessary because this is his "destination job." Petrino is 83-30 as a college coach. His record includes a 34-17 mark at Arkansas that ended amid scandal in April 2012. He came to the Razorbacks after a 3-10 season in 2007 with the Falcons that ended with the coach announcing his departure by letters left at the players lockers. "I made mistakes, both professionally and personally, and thats something Im not going to do again," Petrino said. "The first mistake was leaving Louisville, and Im hoping that the fans and everybody will forgive me. Im more energized, more excited than Ive ever been." Petrino had been mentioned for the Louisville job almost from the moment Strong left for the Longhorns, but the coach said he became aware of the opening only after Cardinals athletic director Tom Jurich approached WKU athletic director Todd Stewart for permission to interview him. Jurich said he was angry at Petrino early in the Tuesday interview because of the coachs behaviour in his previous Louiisville stint, one that included player disciplinary issues.dddddddddddd The AD also said he was mad at Petrino for leaving after the Orange Bowl win for the pros, though he acknowledged the coach was honest about his interest in the job. On Sunday, Jurich said he and Petrino had previously resolved their differences. But he wanted to see if the coach had truly changed as he has professed since Arkansas fired him for "a pattern of misleading behaviour" following a motorcycle accident in which he revealed his mistress was a passenger. Jurich came away convinced he was getting a different man from the one who left, reinforcing his belief that Petrino was the right fit for the Cardinals. "If it was the same Bobby that was here 10 years ago, I wasnt interested," said Jurich, adding that he kept coming back to Petrino as he went through a list of seven finalists. "He is definitely a changed person." While Petrinos critics have been skeptical about his commitment, public sentiment for his hiring has been mostly favourable on sports talk radio, online polls and social media. Petrino has been contrite since the embarrassing matter and reiterated Thursday he has been humbled by his experiences. Asked how he would quell skepticism, the coach said, "the thing you do is just show (it). I have a sign in the locker room that says its a show-me world." Petrino is already off and running on his staff. A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that UAB coach Garrick McGee is stepping down and has agreed to become Petrinos offensive co-ordinator. The new Cardinals coach added that he will retain defensive line coach Clint Hurtt, penalized in October by the NCAA for violations committed as a Miami (Fla.) assistant. Louisvilles hiring of the offence-minded Petrino excited Cardinals players, such as leading rusher Dominique Brown, because of the potential of maintaining a high-powered unit Strong left behind. He acknowledged there were questions about his commitment but said those doubts disappeared after the coach met with players. "There were a couple of on the fence, but now all the players are convinced," Brown said. "We knew what we had while he was here, a top-10 offence. He had a good track record while he was here. I knew he liked to use big backs like Michael Bush. I was kind of worried, but now we are all convinced." Petrino said he was excited to get started with his second go-round with Louisville. "Its certainly a privilege to see how everything has moved, and now were going into the ACC," he said. "Its a great challenge to see the schedule we have coming up, and I cant wait to play that schedule." Like many at Toronto FC, Justin Morrow is looking forward not backwards. While the view in TFCs rear mirror is littered with losses, Morrow sees a positive new beginning ahead of him in a Toronto shirt after four seasons in San Jose. Morrow started 33 games in 2012 for the Earthquakes, a number that dropped to 21 last season as the acquisition of English veteran Jordan Stewart cut into his playing time. "A lot of things happened last year, on a team level, on a personal level," Morrow said in an interview. "But what happened last year is in the past. Im ready to get into Toronto and make an impact. Im really excited about the (Toronto) move. What happened last year, Im really not looking back at it. Ill learn from it but Im moving forward." Asked if he got a fair shake last year, Morrow politely shut that topic of conversation down. The Earthquakes fired manager Frank Yallop in June after the Earthquakes stumbled to a 3-6-6 start. Fellow Canadian Mark Watson was promoted from assistant coach to take over. Stewart signed in July when the Quakes defence had allowed 32 goals in 20 games. Toronto acquired Morrow from San Jose in mid-December for allocation money, with manager Ryan Nelsen delighted to get the 26-year-old Cleveland native. The signings of England striker Jermain Defoe, U.S. international midfielder Michael Bradley, and Braziilian forward Gilberto may have garnered most of the recent headlines but Nelsen says the additions of Morrow, Canadian veteran Dwayne De Rosario and Brazilian Jackson are key to the Toronto reboot. Asked about Morrow, Nelsen launched into a shopping list of positives. "U.S. international, MLS all-star, a really good (salary) number, a great guy," he said. "His athleticism. I really like athletic fullbacks. He can play a number of positions as well, he can play centre back, he can play left midfield. Theres so much to like about Justin, especially his character. And hes hungry and he wants to win." Morrow, an all-star in 2012, calls himself an attacking fullback with pace and grit who likes to get involved in the offence. Understandably, Morrow welcomes the high-profile Toronto additions. "It just shows the clubs commitment to the future and that they want to be successful, which is a very important thing," he said. "When youre a football player you just want to be a part of a winning team, you want to be part of an organization thats trying to win. "Toronto FCs definitely showing that right now, so Im incredibly excited to be part of it all." With 71 regular-season appearances in MLS, Morrow also brings experience to Toronto. Only De Rosario (324), Jackson (91) and Jeremy Hall (112) have more on the Toronto roster. Ashtone Morgan, the 22-year-old Canadian international who will be Morrows champion at left back, has made 66 appearances. Toronto may also have a new starter in right fullback in English newcomer Bradley Orr. Morrow, whose 2013 salary was listed at US$139,560 by the MLS Players Union, has won one cap for the U.S., in a friendly 0-0 tie with Canada in January 2013. Morrow was also an unused substitute in World Cup qualifying matches against Costa Rica and Mexico last March. He was selected in the second round (28th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. The five-foot-nine 165-pounder played collegiate soccer at Notre Dame, where he appeared in 89 games in four seasons mostly in left midfield. The Fighting Irish are coached by Bobby Clark, who coached Nelsen when he attended Stanford. In San Jose, Morrow was involved with reading programs for kids at the local library. Zimmermann took a perfect game into the sixth inning and finished with a two-hitter and a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead the Washington Nationals to a 6-0 victory against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. His game plan worked perfectly for spacious Petco Park. "I was throwing strikes and the guys got me some runs early," he said. "My mentality changed to pour strikes into the zone and fill it up. Big ballpark, just let them hit the ball and I had a lot of strikeouts today which means my fastball was pretty good and I was able to locate it pretty good." Zimmermann (5-2) faced only two batters over the minimum as he walked none in his first complete game of the season and sixth of his career. It was his third career shutout. His previous career high was 11 strikeouts, which hed done twice. The Padres were shut out for the 10th time, tops in the majors, and for the second time in the three-game series. Tanner Roark and the Nationals beat the Padres 6-0 Friday night in a combined three-hitter. Zimmermann said he had a "pretty terrible" bullpen session before the game. "But I guess thats the way it works. When thats bad its usually a game, but when you have a good bullpen you have a good game." He said he didnt think about a no-hitter. "Thats really tough to do. My career numbers say I give up a hit an inning, so I figured they were going to get a hit at some point in the game. It was fun putting up the zeroes but the main thing was to go deep and win the ballgame." San Diegos offensive ineptness was glaring against Zimmermann. He retired the first 16 batters before Alex Amarista singled to right field. Zimmermann then struck out pinch-hitter Tommy Medica and Everth Cabrera to end the inning. "From the first pitch, he was in the strike zone again," manager Matt Williams said. "Strike one is important. He was able to do that today. Fastball command -- he was throwing it exactly where he wanted to throw it." "We just didnt see the ball," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We didnt pick it up off him. He pumped some fastballs on us early and mixed some breaking balls early on and we couldnt solve him.&quoot; The Padres entered the game with the lowest batting average in the majors, .dddddddddddd220. In the span of seven games, they were two-hit twice -- also by Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox -- and one-hit once, although they beat Pittsburgh in that game. "Even with that lead, he hit his spots," Cameron Maybin said of Zimmermann. "He doesnt walk very many people. Sometimes you have to tip your hat. Guys like that are tough to come back against. The guy is pretty good. "In our ballpark, if you can stay out of the middle of the plate, its always tough, especially with his stuff," Maybin said. "He did a great job of locating his pitches today." In his previous start, Zimmermann gave up five hits in eight shutout innings in a 7-0 win against Philadelphia. Ian Desmond hit his second two-run home run in as many games for the Nationals. Danny Espinosa and Jayson Werth each had three hits. San Diegos Seth Smith tripled leading off the eighth and was stranded. Padres left-hander Eric Stults (2-7) lasted only 2 1-3 innings, the shortest of his 85 career starts. He allowed six runs and eight hits, struck out two and walked none. Desmond hit a two-run homer to centre field in the second inning to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead. It was his 13th. He also hit a two-run homer Saturday night to give the Nationals the lead in a game they would lose 4-3 in 11 innings. Stults allowed three straight singles opening the third, including Adam LaRoches RBI base hit. After getting Ryan Zimmerman to line out to first, Stults allowed a single to Desmond to load the bases and was pulled. Tim Stauffer came on and allowed Espinosas two-run single. NOTES: Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon missed his second straight start after getting hit in the hand by a smash by Carlos Quentin on Friday night. Williams said Rendon should be able to play Monday. ... The Nationals open a four-game series at San Francisco on Monday night, when RHP Stephen Strasburg (5-4, 3.10) is scheduled to start against RHP Ryan Vogelsong (4-2, 3.39). ... Itll be a homecoming for Williams, who played his first 10 big league seasons with the Giants. ... The Padres are off Monday before opening a three-game series Tuesday at Philadelphia. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - American John Isner made short work of his third-round match Wednesday in the Winston-Salem Open, beating Kazakhstans Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Isner, the tournaments top seed and two-time champion, served 17 aces and needed just 68 minutes to oust the 13th-seeded Kukushkin in the final tuneup for next weeks U.S. Open. "It couldve gone a lot quicker," said Isner, who was born in nearby Greensboro, N.C. "I made it tough on myself, which Im not too pleased about because of how I was serving. Still, I played well at the end of the match and Im off in straight sets again, which is nice." The 6-foot-10 Isner broke Kukushkins serve twice and won nearly three-quarters of all points played in the first set, which he completed in just 18 minutes. However, Isner had a tougher time in the second set. While he served 12 aces, he also struggled to finish points against the smaller Kukushkin. "I was putting a lot of pressure on him, and doing the right things," Isner said. "But I got away from that a little bit. Of course, he changed his tactics up, and certainly played better in the second set. It got away from me there a little bit, but I played well at the end." Isner, 12-0 all-time in the tournament, will face seventh-seeded Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in Thursdays semifinals. Rosol advanced with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over 10th-seeded Pedro Andujar of Spain. Also advancing to the quarterfinals were American Sam Querrey, fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, Belgian qualifier David Goffin, Polands Jerzy Janowicz, ninth-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan and 14th-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy. Querrey will play Garcia-Lopez in one quarterfinal match at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. The other pairings have Goffin facing Janowicz and Lu taking on Seppi. In earlier matches, Garcia-Lopez battled through a third-set tiebreaker before beating 11th-seeded Donald Young of the U.S. 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Garcia-Lopez overcame a 6-4 deficit in the third tiebreaker by winning four consecutive points to advance to an ATP tournament quarterfinal for the sixth time this year. "The last month in Europe on the clay courts, I was losing a lot of tiebreakers," said Garcia-Lopez, who won his third career ATP Tour title last April in Morocco. "But at the end today, I got lucky. Sometimes the tiebreaker is a lottery, and I got the number. Thats why I won." In other third-round matches, Querrey defeated second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; Goffin extended his winning streak to 25 consecutive matches by beating 15th-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-4, 4-6, 6-4; Janowicz downed 12th-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Lu beat No. 8 seed Marcel Gransllers of Spain 6-1, 6-2; and Seppi defeated Frances Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Despite almost exhausting all methods of saying no by this point, the B.C. native once again shot down the notion of facing his teammate. However, MacDonalds reluctance appeared to raise the ire of Tyron Woodley, who was preparing for a bout with Josh Koscheck. It just keeps getting better and better. My statement is in reference to Blue Bombers quarterback Drew Willy and his pressure performance in Winnipegs 27-26 win over Hamilton. His game was good - 31 out of 43 completions - but it was the last drive that was so impressive. With 1:40 to go, he moved the ball 94 yards, completing 7 of 9 passes for 79 yards and running for another 15; every yard had something to do with Drew Willy. So as much as it is time to recognize the performance, it is also good to recognize the support behind the performance on two levels. First Marcel Bellefeuille as an offensive coordinator has excelled at teaching the foundation and developing the game plan for Willy. Also, theres Buck Pierce. Listed as running backs coach you know he must have a calming influence on the present quarterback. Pierce as a former player has pretty much experienced everything you can as a player, both good and bad, and that experience is very valuable to a player like Drew Willy who is going through that process right now. Its been mainly good for him, but you know the bad is coming. The game itself was a battle of the punters in the first half and an exchange of big play makers in the second. And that half was the only good half for Hamilton. To say that Dan LeFevour was humbled a bit is accurate as Winnipeg did an exceptional job of running, chasing and catching a quarterback who had over 100 yards rushing the previous week. One bright moment for Hamilton was the punt return for a touchdown by Quincy McDuffie - at 510" and 178 lbs he has an elusiveness that makes him special. Whomever found him deserves a pat on the back because I think the young man can play and produce. Yes, the Ticats had one and gave one away on the last play but what can you do? Only "man up" as players, learn from the mistakes and move on to play the BC Lions on Friday night. Dont over-analyze or criticize, just learn and move on. In Montreal I just dont get it. Yes they have some serious quarterback problems and some absence of confidence in both pivots. Throwing accuracy is the No. 1 problem but how do you improve upon that when you can play consistently as an opportunity to improve? Troy Smith started out the game and ran 13 plays. Then Alex Brink came in and ran 15 plays. Back to Smith and eight more plays and to conclude the game Brink ran 18 plays. That is the type of rotation you use in an exhibition game if you want to evaluate four separate quarterbacks. Its not what you do in Week 6 when you need to commit to one QB until you conclude that one can or cannot do the job. For Toronto the best running back they have is Steve Slaton.dddddddddddd That is the guy I would make my starter. Watching the second game on Friday night, you have to wonder what type of team the BC Lions will be from week to week. Kevin Glenn showed remarkable resiliency in going 3-for-3 to win it in the end but when Travis Lulay is back it will be his team. The early performance by Andrew Harris this season has been enjoyable to watch. IF, and I know it is a big IF, he keeps this pace up Harris is on pace for 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards. Easy to say, tough to do. Finally, Saturday night in Ottawa and you could see it coming. Every team at some point of the year has a game that starts bad, gets out of control and in the game film afterward you remember it but dont let it get you down. On Saturday night the Redblacks looked like an expansion team for the first time this year. They have pieces but not the parts just yet. Rick Campbell has assembled a good CFL staff and they should be confronted with the mistakes made to make sure they dont happen again. This one has to be an education that provides future results as Ottawa looked like a collection of players, as opposed to a team of performers. With Saskatchewan this thought popped into my head at halftime. Someone should give George Cortez another shot as a head coach. For whatever the reason and its insignificant now, George did not endear himself with many in Hamilton when he was a head coach there. Why, who knows? But the second time around you learn and adapt with flexibility. His success with quarterbacks and QB systems is undisputed and like John Hufnagle his overall experience is this league is an asset of extreme benefit. I dont know if the next young talent is out there but a slightly older one is Cortez. The Riders had intense focus in Ottawa and just like Cory Chamblin said after the crushing 48-15 defeat in Toronto during Week 2, "we will learn from this" - and they did. For the future? Saskatchewan at Winnipeg is the best game in the seventh week with only 13 to go. And a final thought after the final note. My congratulations and sincere thanks to the people in Calgary. An all-time record was set in the Purolator Tackle Hunger food donation with 258,000 lbs of food brought to the stadium in one night. I an trying to visualize what that looks like and I cant. That type of response says in loud volume the compassion and strength of the people in Alberta and in the city of Calgary. And Im not comparing to any other cities, just acknowledging a great moment to help others. Oh, and Edmonton: your day is Friday, September 26. Just a reminder.
