NEW YORK (AP) — Get ready for strikes by robots. No Barry Bonds Jersey , overworked machines aren’t walking out in a labor protest.Computers will be used for ball/strike calls starting April 25 in the independent Atlantic League, where the distance between home and first will be shortened by 3 inches. The ground between the mound and home plate will lengthen by 2 feet for the second half of the season beginning July 12.The 60-foot-6-inch distance between the front of the pitching rubber and the back point of home plate has been standard since 1893, but Major League Baseball reached a three-year deal to experiment in the Atlantic League, an eight-team circuit that occasionally produces big leaguers. Infield defensive shifts will be limited. Pitchers there will have to get used to 62 feet, 2 inches this summer.“That’ll make a bigger difference than the 3 inches at first,” New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird said.Plate umpires will wear earpieces and be informed of ball/strike calls by a TrackMan computer system that uses Doppler radar. Umps will have the ability to override the computer, which considers a pitch a strike when the ball bounces and then crosses the zone. TrackMan also does not evaluate check swings.“The beauty of baseball is that it’s not foolproof. You’ve got to hit a round ball with a cylindrical bat square, and then you’ve got to get it past people,” said Joe West, who umpired his first big league game in 1976. “The game is typically American. It’s always somebody else’s fault when they lose — and usually it’s us.”MLB has evaluated its umpires since first starting to install a QuesTec system in 2001 that umpires initially criticized as being inaccurate. Questec was used at a maximum of 11 ballparks in 2008, its final year.A PitchF/x system, a partnership of MLB Advanced Media and Sportvision, was the basis of evaluations from 2009-16 Madison Bumgarner Jersey , and the TrackMan system was tested during the final year of that span. TrackMan has been used to evaluate umpires since 2017.West, who has umpired more than 5,000 big league games and is on track to break Bill Klem’s record in 2020, said the 2016 test was far from perfect.“It missed 500 pitches in April, and when I say it missed 500 pitches, that didn’t mean they called them wrong. They didn’t call them at all,” he said.In addition, bases will become 18-inch squares in the Atlantic League, up from the 15-inch squares that have been standard since 1877. That will in effect cut the distance from the front of home plate to the front of first base from 87 feet, 9 inches to 87 feet 6 inches. The 90-foot measurement between bases is from the back of the plate to the back corner of first and third along the foul line. While the distance between the mound and the plate will be lengthened, the height will remain 10 inches — its level since 1969.“Changing the distance, that seems a little odd to me,” Yankees manager Aaron Boon said. “I know lowering the mound is an interesting one Juan Marichal Jersey , obviously, something that would favor offense and maybe in some level help with some pitching injuries.”Other changes for the season:— Infield shifts will be restricted by requiring two infielders to be on each side of second base when a pitcher releases his pitch. Infielders also will be prohibited from setting up on the outfield grass.— Each pitcher must face at least three batters or complete the half-inning, unless injured.— Between inning breaks will be cut from 2 minutes, 5 seconds to 1:45.— Mound visits are banned, except for pitching changes or medical issues.Atlantic League teams are in Bridgewater, New Jersey; Central Islip, New York; High Point, North Carolina; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; New Britain, Connecticut; Sugar Land, Texas; Waldorf, Maryland; and York, Pennsylvania.Southern Maryland is at Sugar Land in the opener. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Dodgers have a slew of good young players. Their nearly-40 trio can still come up big , too.Rich Hill scattered three hits over seven innings, David Freese went 2 for 3 with a home run, and Russell Martin also went 2 for 3 in helping Los Angeles beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-0 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep in a matchup of the National League’s top two teams.Hill is 39; Freese and Martin are 36.Article continues below ...“There’s definitely a need for a veteran experience,” Hill said. “That veteran kind of mindset when you get into certain types of situations, it’s good to have that kind of veteran leadership in the clubhouse.”Hill (2-1) struck out nine and walked three, including a pair of intentional passes to Maikel Franco. He did not allow a hit until J.T. Realmuto singled starting the fifth.“He was on the attack all day and had those guys guessing,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. The West-leading Dodgers extended their winning streak to five with their seventh series sweep, improving the best home record in the major leagues to 25-7.East-leading Philadelphia lost four in a row for the first time this season and got swept for the first time.“We bumped up against a red-hot team,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. “They outplayed us.”Andrew McCutchen singled leading off the sixth, and Cèsar Hernàndez doubled in the seventh for the Phillies’ other hits off Hill.Freese homered for the second straight game, connecting in the seventh against Vince Velasquez (2-3). Freese entered in the fifth as a defensive replacement at first base and made a leaping, left-handed grab on a sharply hit liner by Bryce Harper that ended the eighth.“I’m 36 and just about done. I’m here for the ride,” Freese said. “I’m having a blast here and it’s not really about the 40-plus wins. I really love this group here and they treat me well.”Freese typically knows when he might enter a game but got pressed into action unexpectedly.“When you get bum-rushed, you’re not really ready,” he said. “My body was not ready.”Harper was hitless in four at-bats and was 2 for 12 in the series, dropping his average to .248. Rhys Hoskins went 2 for 11 and McCutchen was 2 for 12 over the three games.Los Angeles matched its highest-scoring inning this season when the Dodgers batted around in the eighth. Alex Verdugo and Freese had RBI singles. Chris Taylor drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt as Freese came home on a throwing error by pitcher Yacksel Rios, careening around third base and nearly falling down. Enriquè Hernàndez hit a sacrifice fly, and Joc Pederson had a two-run homer.“I didn’t fall?” Freese said Ryan McMahon Jersey , laughing. “I got 180 feet in me and after that I don’t know what’s going to happen.”Phillies starter Nick Pivetta gave up three hits over a season-best six innings, striking out a season-high nine and walking none.“They’re a good team but we’re a really good team, too,” Pivetta said. “When we face them again down the stretch I expect a close series again.”TRAINER’S ROOMDodgers: LHP Tony Cingrani (left shoulder impingement) will have arthroscopic surgery next week, likely ending his season. … 1B Matt Beaty left the game because of left hip tightness after the fourth inning. … 3B Justin Turner walked as a pinch hitter after missing three straight games with hamstring tightness.PHILLIES TRADE FOR BRUCEPhiladelphia acquired former All-Star OF Jay Bruce from Seattle for minor league INF Jake Scheiner. The deal will cost Philadelphia just $2.75 million over the next 1½ seasons. Bruce is hitting .212 with 14 homers and 28 RBIs with 53 strikeouts in 184 at-bats.“Jay Bruce makes our bench stronger and I also think he makes our lineup stronger on days when we’ll see a right-handed pitcher,” Kapler said.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Aaron Nola (6-0, 4.18 ERA) starts Monday in the opener of a three-game series at San Diego. He is 1-0 against the Padres, scattering four hits over six scoreless innings last season.Dodgers: RHP Walker Buehler (5-1, 4.03) starts at Arizona on Monday. He has a 4.70 ERA in three career starts against the D-backs. Arm soreness led to severe struggles and limited innings in 2013.However, L贸pez really took off in 2014 with Auburn and Hagerstown. For those two teams, he combined to post a spectacular 1.08 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over 83 1鈦? innings, allowing 42 hits (.149 OBA) and 26 walks (2.81 BB/9) while striking out 70 hitters (7.56 K/9). The following year saw a regression against tougher competition in A+ Potomac, as L贸pez posted a respectable 4.09 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 99 innings B.J. Upton Jersey , with 93 hits (.252 OBA) and 28 walks (2.55 BB/9) compared to 94 strikeouts (8.55 K/9). Other than simply giving up more hits, L贸pez’s walk and strikeouts actually improved from his terrific 2014.In 2016, L贸pez pitched equally well for AA Harrisburg and AAA Syracuse. Combined with both squads, he produced a 3.21 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over 109 1鈦? innings, ceding just 90 hits (.220 OBA) and 35 walks (2.88 BB/9) while fanning 126 hitters (10.37 K/9). He even received his first taste of major league action, with 11 appearances (six starts). In his 44 innings with the Nationals, L贸pez posted a 4.91 ERA and 1.57 WHIP, surrendering 47 hits (.272 OBA) and 22 walks (4.50 BB/9) while striking out 42 (8.59 K/9). On December 7, L贸pez was traded to the White Sox along with fellow righthanders Lucas Giolito and Dane Dunning for outfielder Adam Eaton.L贸pez started 2017 with the Charlotte Knights. In 22 International League starts totaling 121 innings, he compiled a 3.79 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, surrendering 101 hits (.220 OBA) and 49 walks (3.64 BB.9) while striking out 131 hitters (9.74 K/9).On August 11, he earned his promotion to the White Sox. In eight starts totaling 47 2鈦? innings, L贸pez posted a 4.72 ERA and 1.32 WHIP, relinquishing 49 hits (.258 OBA) and 14 walks (2.64 BB/9) while striking out 30 (5.56 K/9). Aside from strikeout rates, L贸pez’s major league numbers improved in most areas when compared to his 2016 debut.L贸pez with the White Sox in 2018Although L贸pez certainly underwent some growing pains in his first full major league season, most would deem it a success. In 32 starts totaling a career-high 188 2鈦? innings, Lopez posted a 3.91 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, allowing 165 hits (.234 OBA) and 75 walks (3.58 BB/9) while striking out 151 (7.20 K/9). What’s impressive is that , despite easily surpassing his career high in innings, he got stronger as the season careened toward its end. In L贸pez’s last seven starts covering 45 2鈦? innings, he posted a 1.38 ERA and 0.92 WHIP by allowing only 28 hits and 14 walks (2.76 BB/9) while also fanning 48 (9.46 K/9). Of course, many peripherals indicated that L贸pez should have suffered a far worse ERA than he actually posted. For example, with his four-seam fastball (averaging 95.5 mph) that he threw 60.7% of the time, his slash rates were .237/.335/.428, when they should’ve been .262/.365/.476. Actually by judging his four-pitch repertoire, the slider was L贸pez’s most effective pitch. Averaging 83.9 mph, the slider offered a nice speed variation and produced 55 strikeouts compared to just six walks; hitters also slashed just .199/.217/.272 against this pitch (thrown 17.9% of the time). L贸pez’s third-best pitch was his changeup, which averaged 83.6 mph and was thrown 15.5% of the time; hitters batted .258/.318/.442 against this offering, where peripherals also showed he could’ve fared far worse. Finally, L贸pez’s curveball was his weakest pitch despite its 76 mph velocity; hitters slashed .357/.458/.643 against this pitch, which he (understandably) threw only 5.5% of the time. Why did L贸pez finish with a 3.91 ERA when his FIP was 4.63? Part of the answer was that he simply buckled down when runners got on base; he posted a .203 OBA and 0.99 WHIP with RISP. The second part of that answer is that in those critical two-out situations, L贸pez posted an impressive .186 OBA and 1.14 WHIP. In these situations, L贸pez threw a higher percentage of sliders to get batters out.Lopez posted a 3.1 bWAR for the year. Considering each bWAR is worth approximately $7.7 million (per FanGraphs), considering his 2018 salary of $555,000, L贸pez provided a net value of$23 Jason Kipnis Jersey ,315,000 for the White Sox. Not shabby at all! What does the future have in store for L贸pez in a White Sox uniform? While L贸pez certainly did have his rough patches (July, for example, when he posted a 7.39 ERA and 1.79 WHIP), he was still the most consistently successful White Sox starting pitcher from beginning to end. Though many fans have southpaw Carlos Rod贸n pegged to pitch Opening Day, Lopez can make things interesting with a terrific spring.L贸pez will begin his arbitration years in 2021, and will ultimately become a free agent in 2024 unless the White Sox decide to extend him. For next year, not including any free agent signings or trades which are expected to happen, he’ll be part of a rotation that includes Rodon, Giolito, and two of a mix of Manny Banuelos, Dylan Covey, Jordan Stephens and Jordan Guerrero. As for 2020 and beyond, he could be part of a young starting corps (L贸pez turns 25 in January) that includes some combination of Rodon, Michael Kopech, Dylan Cease, Dane Dunning and Alec Hansen.

Well , that was certainly... something."It may be only three games into the season, but after watching Friday and Saturday’s games, I needed a mental health day. So I skipped this one: probably a good thing, as I suspect my blood pressure would have reached fatal levels! Luke Weaver’s first start for the D-backs was rough, loading the bases before he got an out, as the Dodgers scored three runs. They had a 4-0 lead at one point, but the Diamondbacks roared back with a seven-run fourth Alex Colome Jersey , including a two-run homer from... Luke Weaver. But Arizona could not hold the 7-4 lead, with a three-run eighth inning doing most of the damage, Yoshihisa Hirano struggling once again. The D-backs went down 1-2-3 in the ninth against Kenley Jansen. and that was it. despite 13 hits (two each by David Peralta, ejected in the ninth, Adam Jones, Ketel Marte and Nick Ahmed) as their pitching failed again. In an era when players and clubs treat the tiniest tidbit as a state secret, Mendoza already felt teams were hesitant to provide her intelligence in her pundit role because they knew “information they would give me as a member from ESPN was about to go on air.” She doesn’t expect that to change with the new job title.Mendoza spoke Thursday during a conference call with booth-mate Alex Rodriguez to promote the 30th anniversary of ESPN’s Sunday night broadcasts, which also include play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian.Mark Gross, ESPN senior vice president of production and remote events , expressed confidence in Mendoza’s impartiality. She will continue to broadcast games involving the Mets.“We’re not looking to fool anybody. We’re not looking to trick the viewers into anything,” he said. “We’ll be upfront with viewers off the top of the game, letting people know, and we will let the viewers decide ultimately if this is something that they’re on board with.”Rodriguez has been a New York Yankees adviser since his retirement, among several players to work as broadcasters while retaining a part-time role with a team.“Alex’s commentary last year on a Yankee game was no different than if it was on any other game,” Gross said.A member of the U.S. Olympic softball team in 2004 and 2008, Mendoza said new Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen first spoke with her about a position last August or September, when he still was co-head of the CAA Baseball agency and was preparing to interview with New York.“I’m actually putting you in my presentation and I just wanted to get your OK with that, your thoughts,” she remembered him saying. “So we kind of started talking about it then, and from there Bradley Zimmer Jersey , obviously, he got the job.”Van Wagenen asked her at first whether she would move to New York to work for the Mets full-time, an entreaty Mendoza took as “a little joking.” The 38-year-old wanted to remain in California, where her kids go to school. She views ESPN as her “full-bore priority.” Mendoza has spent one day working for the Mets since she was hired March 5.Mendoza says she isn’t worried that Mets owner Fred Wilpon or chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, the owner’s son, would be upset if she is critical. Mendoza promises to be just as reproving directly with team management.“Part of my job is to kind of look, evaluate and knowing that, be honest. I’m an analyst first,” she said. “I would hope that that’s why they hired me, because of my honesty and criticism and not just to say all the right things.”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Juan Soto made a leaping catch in foul territory in the first game of a doubleheader and ended eight hours of baseball with a milestone homer in the second game. Both plays from the talented teen keyed a sensational sweep for the Nationals.Soto hit a solo home run in the 10th inning , his second of the game, to lead the Washington Nationals to a 7-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday night.“I’ve never seen a 19 year old swing and be that patient at the plate,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “He’s 19 but he plays like he’s been in the league a long time.”The Nationals rallied for three runs in the ninth inning off Seranthony Dominguez to tie the game at 6-all. Soto, who hit a two-run shot in the fourth, connected off Yacksel Rios (3-2) with one out in the 10th for the winner.Greg Holland retired the first batters in the 10th before he walked the next two. Holland got Cesar Hernandez to fly out to end the game for his third save. Wander Suero (3-0) got the win.In the first game, Spencer Kieboom hit his first major league home run after losing a tooth earlier in the day, Erick Fedde pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and the Nationals beat Phillies 3-1.The doubleheader was needed once Monday’s night’s game was postponed because of poor field conditions from weekend rain. The grounds crew used blow torches to dry a field that had not been covered with a tarp and players described as “spongy” and “soft.”It’s the Phillies who are stuck in the mud.The Phillies, who were 15 games over .500 in early August and in the thick of NL playoff race, have lost four straight games and are 6-16 since Aug. 18. Philadelphia fell 6 ½ games behind Atlanta in the NL East and 6 ½ games behind St. Louis in the race for the second wild card spot. The Nationals (73-72) also swept a doubleheader on Saturday and just may pass the slumping Phillies (74-70) in the final standings.“I’m not going to sugarcoat it. We’re not playing good baseball right now,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. The second game ended 8 1/2 hours after the first pitch in the opener — and with only a smattering of fans at the park each time.“I feel beat up right now and I just stood there,” Martinez said. The Phillies seemed poised to win the nightcap and get some sort of spark going to stay in the NL playoff picture. They scored five runs in the fourth inning off starter Tanner Roark, and Jose Bautista hit a solo shot in the eighth to make it 6-3.But Dominguez failed them and Kapler let his closer labor through 43 pitches before pulling him. With 20 active pitchers, Kapler nearly gave them all a turn during the day — except when Dominguez needed help. The Phillies loaded the bases in the ninth, but the rally was snuffed when Bautista flied out.Soto had three hits and four RBIs in the nightcap and passed Ken Griffey Jr. for fourth on the career list for homers by a teenager with 18. He also has the most multi-homer games by a teenager in baseball history with three.“Can’t wait to talk to 2-2 over there,” Roark said in the Nationals clubhouse. The Nats had reason to smile — even if Kieboom Paul DeJong Jersey , a rookie catcher, was missing a tooth. Kieboom is waiting on veneers and lost half a temporary tooth earlier at breakfast when he bit into a baguette. The other half was stuck in his gums.He looked as if he spit out a tooth while he walked to the plate in the fifth in the opener. It was just a big spitball. He pointed to the gap as he jogged back to the dugout after the solo homer.“I just popped it off,” he said, laughing. “I’ve got to roll with this for a little while but that’s fine. The Caps, those boys play with no teeth. I can play with no teeth.”Phillies starter Nick Pivetta (7-12) was one of seven pitchers to work the opener.Fedde (2-3), making his second start since he missed two months with a sore right shoulder, tossed one-hit ball through five. The late afternoon start resulted in a sparse crowd for the first pitch. The 40-plus-person Phillies contingent in front of the dugout for the national anthem was larger than the bunch of fans in the upper deck.“One thing that we continue to focus on is who can perform best under sub-optimal conditions,” Kapler said. “So optimal conditions are a packed house and really fired up and energetic and suboptimal conditions are when you have more challenging situations. And I think today was a more challenging situation and we always challenge our guys to do the best under those circumstances that they possibly can.”FLIP OUTPhillies 3B Maikel Franco flipped over a railing and into the dugout chasing down a foul ball in the eighth inning of the nightcap. Franco left the game with a right shoulder contusion and neck soreness.DOUBLE DIPThe Phillies have played four doubleheaders this season, their most since 2011. They’ve played three at Citizens Bank Park since the All-Star break.MOVING ON UPThe Phillies recalled RHP Drew Anderson, RHP Enyel De Los Santos and LHP Ranger Suarez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.UP NEXTIt’s a doozy: Washington sends RHP Stephen Strasburg (7-7, 4.04 ERA) to the mound against RHP Aaron Nola (16-4, 2.29).__ OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — With several key stars sidelined by injuries, the Houston Astros relied on some lesser-known fill-ins who were in the minors just a week ago.Derek Fisher hit a tiebreaking homer to lead off the eighth inning after pinch-runner Myles Straw and defensive replacement Jack Mayfield made key plays in the seventh to help the short-handed Astros rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.“They’re doing everything they can to make good impressions,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “They’re really happy to be in the big leagues. There’s a lot of talent in this organization. We built that depth. It’s coming in handy now.”Article continues below ...The Astros trailed the A’s 2-0 heading into the seventh inning on a night they were missing injured stars Jose Altuvé lex Reyes Jersey , Carlos Correa and George Springer. But Josh Reddick started the comeback with a solo homer and Tony Kemp tied the game with a double. That set the stage for Fisher, who sent a drive out to center field against Lou Trivino (2-2) on the first pitch of the eighth to hand the A’s their third straight loss following a 10-game winning streak.“I knew I hit it hard,” Fisher said. “I know Ramón (Laureano) tends to pull some crazy plays out of nowhere. Thankfully the ball didn’t find a glove, and even better, it went over the wall.”Héctor Rondón (3-1) pitched out of a jam in the seventh with help from a diving stop at shortstop by Mayfield that held Laureano at third base with the infield drawn in. Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.Brad Peacock allowed just one run in his previous four starts and pitched around a little bit of trouble in the first two innings. But the A’s got to him in the third, ending a stretch of 14 straight scoreless innings.Robbie Grossman hit an opposite-field single away from the shift with one out and Chapman followed with a no-doubt shot to left field on a 0-2 fastball right down middle. The A’s didn’t manage anything else against Peacock, who allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.Houston then tied it in the seventh against Mike Fiers. Josh Reddick snapped an 0-for-15 rut with a solo homer with one out to make it 2-1 and Fiers was replaced by Lou Trevino after issuing a two-out walk to Tyler White. Kemp then hit a drive to left that Grossman took a bad angle on, sending Straw home on an RBI double that tied the game.“We’re not worried, but these games, we’ve got to lock down, especially late in the game against a team like that,” Fiers said. “We can’t give them too much. It’s a tight game. If we want to win the division, we have to win these games.”TRAINER’S ROOMAstros: Correa reported to the ballpark in Houston, but is unable to do any work since cracking rib earlier this week. Correa said he was injured while getting a massage at his home Tuesday. He released a video on the YouTube channel of his fiancée, Daniella Rodriguez Evan Longoria Jersey , on Friday, detailing how the injury occurred and thanking fans for their support. … Altuve (left hamstring) took grounders before the game; INF Aledmys Díaz (hamstring) and Springer (hamstring) both ran and took some swings; and RHP Joe Smith (Achilles) threw a 20-pitch live BP session at West Palm Beach.Athletics: OF Khris Davis (left hip) took BP before the game and could be activated as soon as Saturday. “I think there’s a chance,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We want to make sure he’s not sore tomorrow and feels as good as he did today.”ROUGH PATCHOne game after allowing five runs in the 11th inning of a loss to the Angels, Trivino gave up the late lead to the Astros when he couldn’t keep the lead in the seventh. Melvin isn’t worried about one of his most trusted relievers.“Just a couple balls in the middle of the plate,” he said. “He’s still throwing hard, still getting good movement, just maybe not precise on the location of where he’s throwing.”UP NEXTJustin Verlander (8-2, 2.38 ERA), who is tied for second in the majors in wins, gets the start in the middle game of the series for Houston against Brett Anderson (6-3, 3.86 ERA).__

The preparation and build-up to another great season of Astros baseball begins today.A lot of old favorites are gone this year, Charlie Morton, Dallas Keuchel, Marwin Gonzalez, Evan Gattis, Brian McCann and others. Once a shining star in the Astros system, at 28 years old is now fighting just to stay on the 40 man roster. Although in 2016 Rodgers was named the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Year, early in 2017 he required elbow surgery, missing the whole year. He managed to come back for the end of the 2018 season, pitching 41 innings for AAA Fresno with a 5.49 ERA. ST. LOUIS (AP) — hree seasons Jonny Venters Jersey , the St. Louis Cardinals believe they’ve struck gold with Paul Goldschmidt in their quest to play into October.“We knew we just couldn’t have a stagnant offseason. We knew we had to make some changes to our club because we felt like even though we had a good team last year, we still weren’t good enough,” said John Mozeliak, the team’s president of baseball operations.“We looked at all the different options that might be out there, whether it be the free-agent market or what our trade options might look like. We felt that Paul checked so many boxes for us that it made sense,” he said.St. Louis acquired the slugging first baseman from the Arizona Diamondbacks in December for pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a 2019 draft pick.Goldschmidt was glad to join the Cardinals.“This organization here has had success for a really long time and sustained it and that’s really tough to do,” Goldschmidt recently said at a winter fan event. “I’m looking forward to finding ways to help us win. I’m excited about that. This division is really good top to bottom. It’s going to be a challenge.”St. Louis finished 88-74 last season. To remedy its postseason drought, the club sought a big bat to put in a lineup that includes Matt Carpenter, Marcell Ozuna and Yadier Molina to better compete with Milwaukee and Chicago, the last two NL Central Division champions. The Cardinals’ postseason drought is their longest since 1997-99.Mozeliak is hoping Goldschmidt can boost an offense that finished fourth in the NL in homers last season (205) and sixth in runs (759).The 31-year-old Goldschmidt has made six straight All-Star Games — Mike Trout and Salvador Perez are the only other players in the majors with a current streak that long.Goldschmidt hit .290 with 33 homers and 83 RBIs last year, his fourth time in the past six years with at least 30 homers. Over the past eight seasons, he’s averaged 31 home runs, 40 doubles, 97 walks and a .930 OPS.A three-time Gold Glove winner, Goldschmidt also brings some baserunning skills with him. He stole 32 bases in 2016 Matt Moore Jersey , and has averaged 18 a year over his career.Goldschmidt’s teammates are excited about his arrival.Second baseman Kolten Wong said he told Mozeliak the team’s defense will be much better with Goldschmidt.“It’s going to be tough for these guys to sneak a ball past us on the right side,” Wong said. “(This) allows me to be more free and go for balls I know I can go after, and not go after balls to my left, because I know he’s going to be there.”Adding Goldschmidt also will allow the club to move Matt Carpenter to third base on a full-time basis.“I couldn’t be happier not only that I’m moving across the diamond but who I’m moving for,” Carpenter said. “When I got that phone call about who we were getting at first base, I couldn’t have been more excited.”Durable, Goldschmidt has played less than 145 games just once in his last six seasons. Despite an incredibly slow start to last season, he bounced back.“As you saw, I turned it around,” he said. “It wasn’t like I could guarantee I would go out there get hits. It was just keep working. A lot of the credit goes to the hitting coaches we had with Arizona last year. I was relying on those guys. You don’t want to struggle but I’ve had ups and downs forever. As long as this game has been going on, everyone has ups and downs.”Goldschmidt has a $14.5 million salary in the final season of a seven-year deal he signed with Arizona. He will be eligible for free agency after next season. Will he remain a Cardinal?“When you look at someone like Paul Goldschmidt, that is a Cardinal, man,” Wong said. “How he plays the game, how he goes about his business, that’s the Cardinal Way.”“To have someone like that, hopefully to re-sign and be with us long term , that’s something all these guys who are coming up or getting drafted by the Cardinals are going to be able to look at and say: ‘This is how I want to play the game,'” he said. “Even someone like me. I want to be in this guy’s ear. I want to be sitting next to him, finding out what I can.” Rockies news and links for March 15, 2019"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Scaling the RocksPebble ReportRockpileRockies Game ThreadsRockies Fan ExperienceRockpileRewriting the rule book for the RockiesNew,110commentsRockies news and links for March 15, 2019 Rewriting the rule book for the RockiesWhat one of MLB’s newest changes means for the Colorado Rockies | Rox PileThere has been an announcement that several rule changes in the MLB will occur in the near future. A couple will be implemented this season. One of these changes will be the hard and fast trade deadline. This deadline will be July 31, which means no trading in August or September. The roster will go from 25 to 26, with the September roster going from 40 to 28. The pitching staff maximum will be 13 and 14, respectively. Other changes include an All-Star Game Election Day and a $1 million prize for the Home Run Derby winner. More changes will come in 2020, when there will also be a three batter minimum for relief pitchers, preventing relievers from throwing to just one player. The removal of waivers is good news for the Rockies. Colorado’s not really one to make those August trades, but their division rivals, the Dodgers, are. This could make the late matchups between the two teams more interesting. He worked on his own, but he also reached out to teammates and others for advice. He’s really just grown as a player, waiting and learning.e Rockies lost to Cleveland, with Jeff Hoffman having a tough day. Jake McGee also struggled, giving up a grand slam in the sixth. ARLINGTON Jay Bruce Jersey , Texas (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have scored more runs in the first inning this season than any team in baseball. After Paul Goldschmidt’s 27th homer in the first put the NL West-leaders ahead to stay, the Diamondbacks tacked on enough runs to back All-Star lefty Patrick Corbin’s seven strong innings in a 6-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.“To get a couple of runs there and get the lead and add on some runs, it’s huge, just get a good feeling going in the dugout,” Corbin said.Arizona led 1-0 before Corbin (10-4) threw the first of his 96 pitches — 66 of them strikes as he struck out seven without a walk.“Pretty challenging for us tonight,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. “The slider was a pretty dynamic pitch for him.”Corbin, who had never faced Texas before, has made 10 consecutive starts without allowing a homer, the longest span for the Diamondbacks in 15 years and matching Boston’s Chris Sale for the longest active streak in the majors.“He has a really innate quality to locate balls at the bottom of the zone,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “You come to this ballpark, you wonder often what are going to be the conditions, and the ball does fly out of here. … Patrick did a great job, exceptional job of keeping the ball down out of trouble.” Goldschmidt went deep to left in the first with a solo shot off Yovani Gallardo (7-2). Arizona led 4-0 in the fourth after Daniel Descalso had an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch. Descalso earlier had an RBI groundout. Alex Avila’s sixth homer was a two-out solo shot to straightway center in the sixth.Gallardo’s 11.43 run support average since June 23 had been the most in baseball , by nearly two runs over the next-closest pitcher. But he was done after 3 1/3 innings, the shortest of his 10 starts since re-joining Texas.“Just couldn’t put guys away,” Gallardo said. “The main thing for me was to stay positive and get back on track.”Gallardo walked three batters, and 35 of his 76 pitches were balls.Jurickson Profar had a sacrifice fly for Texas before an RBI double to end his 0-for-15 slide .Brad Boxberger worked the ninth for his 27th save in 32 chances, despite giving up a leadoff triple to Profar before a sac fly by Robinson Chirinos. It was only the fourth time in Boxberger’s 45 appearances this season that the first batter he faced got a hit.THE PLAYER TO BE NAMED LATERThe Rangers acquired minor league OF Alexander Ovalles from the Cubs on Tuesday, completing the July 27 trade that sent lefty Cole Hamels to Chicago for RHPs Eddie Butler and Rollie Lacy and a player to be named later. The 17-year-old Ovalles is playing in the Dominican Summer League.QUICK STARTSArizona’s 98 runs in the first inning are six more than Cleveland, which had a four-run first in their 8-1 win at Cincinnati earlier Tuesday.SHORT HOPSCorbin is 5-0 with a 1.60 ERA in his last seven interleague games. … Goldschmidt has reached safely in 34 consecutive roads, one short of the franchise record set by Eric Byrnes in June 2007. … Brandon Webb was the last Diamondbacks starter with 10 consecutive games without allowing a homer. Miguel Batista holds the team record of 11 in a row, from Aug. 22, 2002 to April 25, 2003.TRAINER’S ROOMDiamondbacks: OF A.J. The 39-year-old Beltre, baseball’s active career hits leader, will be re-evaluated Thursday. … RHP Chris Tillman, signed by Texas to a minor league deal after being released by the Baltimore Orioles on July 27, threw only 11 pitches for Triple-A Round Rock before leaving with a groin strain.UP NEXTDiamondbacks: A day off Wednesday in the middle of a nine-game road trip before a four-game series at San Diego.Rangers: After playing 13 days in a row, and 25 of 26 since the All-Star break, the Rangers have a day off before opening a four-game home series Thursday night against the Los Angeles Angels. The Brewers last lost a game in September. The Dodgers dispatched the Braves fairly easily. They collide for the National League Championship Series starting tonight."Are you ready for some more thrilling National League baseball? OK, I know, NL baseball cannot be thrilling by its very nature because pitchers batting is not even real baseball. But it’s all we’ve got on this Friday night and as the Brewers and the Dodgers begin their NLCS, the angle for Birdland is that Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop are on opposite sides. To the rest of the world, this is barely even a relevant storyline to mention. Schoop, unfortunately, has hardly even been playing for Milwaukee lately - not that he’s been playing well enough to deserve it , but he was an Oriole and we like him, so it’s still a strike against the Brewers that Schoop sits. The best of seven begins in Milwaukee. The Brewers, with a win, would be winners of their 12th straight game. This would apparently trigger a promotion by which everyone gets a free hamburger from some chain in the Milwaukee area, a promotion that I read has existed since the 1960s and last paid off in 1987. What a charming and quaint little story. The Dodgers, whatever. They’re the big money titans of the west coast and in spite of that they still had to win a tiebreaker game just to win their division. If they make it to the World Series, ho-hum. Who cares. Bring us some interesting baseball for the next week and a half. The starting lineup for the home team Brewers:Lorenzo Cain - CFChristian Yelich - RFRyan Braun - LFJesus Aguilar - 1BHernan Perez - 2BMike Moustakas - 3BManny Pina - COrlando Arcia - SSGio Gonzalez - PThe lineup for the visiting Dodgers:Chris Taylor - LFJustin Turner - 3BDavid Freese - 1BManny Machado - SSMatt Kemp - RFEnrique Hernandez - 2BCody Bellinger - CFYasmani Grandal - CClayton Kershaw - PAlthough I described the Dodgers as boring above, if Kershaw pitches like Kershaw at his best tonight, that would be interesting.

MESA , Ariz. (AP) — After dealing with various arm injuries and trying to adjust to a new team, Yu Darvish was pleased with his spring debut. Pumped, in fact.Darvish may have walked four and lasted only 1 1/3 innings Tuesday for the Chicago Cubs, but it was an important start for him.“This is like my first outing in my life,” Darvish said. “I haven’t thrown the last seven months. I was so excited.”Darvish faced the Arizona Diamondbacks in his first game since a minor league rehab start last August for Class A South Bend. He had signed a six-year, $126 million contract with the Cubs last February, but battled injuries and was limited to eight starts before he was shut down. He was sidelined with right triceps tendinitis and then diagnosed in August with a stress reaction in his right elbow, which led to arthroscopic surgery in September. So by that measure, this spring performance was a success.“I felt pretty good physically. No pain, that was a huge part,” Darvish said.Another change — now he’s joking in English, opting not to use a translator this season.“Interpreters are expensive for the organization, right? That’s why Jose Reyes Jersey ,” Darvish said. “It’s good for me, too. I have experience with you guys and I can use more English.”Said Cubs manager Joe Maddon: “He appears to be much more relaxed and definitely into the flow of things.”“He’s been throwing really well. Conversationally, he’s much more at ease,” Maddon said.Darvish threw 19 pitches against five D-backs hitters in the first inning at Sloan Park, and got only one swing and miss, then had to wait while the Cubs sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run first. In the second, Darvish threw 17 pitches to three batters before he was lifted. He walked four in 1 1/3 innings. When Darvish made that rehab outing in South Bend, his fastball registered at 86-89 mph. On Tuesday, his fastballs were between 94-96 mph.“Yeah, it was a great day for me,” he said. His teammates have noticed Darvish seems happier.“I feel I’m smiling more than the last seven years,” Darvish said.NOTES: Cubs INF David Bote, hit in the helmet by a pitch from Giants ace Madison Bumgarner on Sunday Jeurys Familia Jersey , was expected to return to action on Wednesday. Bumgarner called Bote after the game and also sent him a text message the next day. “He definitely did not have to do that but he did and it means a lot,” Bote said. … LHP Mike Montgomery, who has yet to appear in a game, threw a bullpen on Tuesday. The Cubs will wait two days to see the next step for Montgomery, who is going through a “dead arm” phase. … Chicago OF Jason Heyward was a late scratch from Tuesday’s lineup for personal reasons. … An MRI revealed that Arizona outfielder Jarrod Dyson has a left oblique strain. WASHINGTON (AP) — In what could be one of his final games for the Nationals, Bryce Harper added another accomplishment to his impressive resume.Anthony Rendon homered and drove four runs, Harper reached 100 RBIs in a season for the first time and Washington beat the Miami Marlins 7-3.Juan Soto and Matt Wieters also homered for the Nationals, who broke it open with four runs on three pitches in the fourth inning.Harper started the big inning, driving in his 100th run with a sacrifice fly that scored Adam Eaton and put Washington ahead 3-1.“I think for me it’s just going out there and trying to score runs and doing the things I can. If I can get to 100 runs, 100 walks and 100 RBIs, it’s pretty cool,” said Harper, who has 126 walks and 99 runs scored. “I’ll take that any day of the week.”His previous high was 99 RBIs in 2015 Mike Piazza Jersey , when he won the NL MVP Award. Harper, a pending free agent, got a standing ovation from the sparse, rain-soaked crowd and congratulations from his teammates.Asked if he’s thought about this possibly being his final home series at Nationals Park, Harper said: “I think for me if I’m worried about that, I’m not worried about my at-bats that night or the game. I’ve got two more games at home and we’ll see what happens on Wednesday.”After Harper’s milestone, Rendon and Soto homered back-to-back on the next two pitches from Sandy Alcantara (2-2). Rendon lofted a two-run shot down the left-field line, and Soto lined one into the visitors’ bullpen in left-center to make it 6-1.Rendon extended his on-base streak to 32 games, the longest active streak in the majors.“He’s Mr. Steady,” manager Dave Martinez said of Rendon, who has 23 homers and 87 RBIs in 131 games. “His all-around game, defense, offense , he’s the guy that keeps our offense together.”Justin Miller (7-1) allowed one unearned run in the fifth in relief of Stephen Strasburg, who was pulled after throwing 100 pitches over four innings. Strasburg gave up a run on three hits and four walks while striking out five and hitting a batter.Strasburg hasn’t lost since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 22.Peter O’Brien had two hits for Miami, which had won three straight. The Marlins left 10 men on base, five in the first two innings.“Yeah we had a lot of chances,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “(Strasburg) threw close to 40 (pitches) in the first and had guys out there. Even after they score we still got guys out there, have a chance to get right back in it there and not able to do anything.”Alcantara allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks in four innings. The Nationals trailed 1-0 in the first when Rendon’s double scored Eaton and Harper.QUOTABLE“It’s sad that he doesn’t get the recognition that he should as one of the best third basemen in the game. I think it’s not fair because he definitely is a big-time player — a superstar player — every single day” — Harper on Rendon.TRAINER’S ROOMMarlins: Mattingly expects RHP Jose Urena, who experienced leg cramps last time out, to make his next scheduled start Friday in New York. “He ran yesterday,” Mattingly said. “It looks like he’s going to be fine. He’s getting an extra day (Thursday) anyway. I think he’ll start.”Nationals: RHP Tanner Roark went home Sunday to be with his wife after the recent birth of their third child. He is still slated to start Wednesday.UP NEXTMarlins: RHP Jeff Brigham (0-3, 5.84) makes his fourth major league start and first against Washington.Nationals: RHP Max Scherzer (17-7, 2.57) needs 10 strikeouts to reach 300 for the season. OAKLAND Chris Hatcher Jersey , Calif. (AP) — Khris Davis hardly cares how many home runs he hits this year if he can slug the Oakland Athletics much deeper into the postseason.Sure, he has some numbers in his head. How could he not after leading the majors with 48 homers last year? Perhaps 50 is now within reach. There was time for reflection, and it has now passed.“I did at the end of the season. Now I’m kind of like over it,” Davis said. “I want to pick up where I left off. I felt like I ended the season on a good note, making it to the playoffs. Nobody thought we’d get there. Even though we lost, there was a lot to be proud of. It was by far the most fun I’ve had playing baseball, because we won so many games. And winning is way better than losing.”With a young power-hitting lineup, the A’s realize they won’t surprise the rest of baseball as they did last year with their knack for late-game rallies and winning the close ones. Oakland lost the AL wild card game to the New York Yankees.“We’ve come a long way as a team to get into this type of position,” manager Bob Melvin said. “It’s easier to envision where the lineup’s going to be and look a little bit farther down the road with this type of team than with teams where you’re kind of always having to mix and match.”Here are some things to watch for as the A’s look to start strong, beginning in Japan on March 20 against the AL West rival Seattle Mariners:MOMENTUM TIME: Melvin expects his A’s to have swagger, a well-deserved confidence after the remarkable turnaround of 2018.The A’s trailed the Mariners by 11 games in the wild-card race on June 15 then propelled themselves into the playoffs with a superb second half.“We were able to, through confidence, create the success, and now we have that kind of confidence to go into the season,” said Melvin, the reigning AL Manager of the Year.PROFAR’S PRESENCE: New second baseman Jurickson Profar joins a talented infield with a pair of slugging Matts — Matt Chapman at third and Matt Olson at first — along with much-improved Marcus Semien at shortstop.Profar knows how good his new club can be after watching the A’s beat his former Texas Rangers so many times before being traded.“Now I get the chance to play with them. So far , it’s fun,” he said. “I’m excited to get it started already and have a good year with everybody.”Profar batted .254 with 20 homers and 77 RBIs in 146 games last season while playing all four infield spots for the Rangers. He is embracing a new opportunity with Oakland.“They did great last year and we’re still young. I’m looking forward to doing it again, go to the playoffs and not only one game like last year. Keep going.”POWER PLAY: Davis, who received a $6 million raise this offseason to $16.5 million, also had a career-high 123 RBIs. He jokes about the fact he has hit .247 for each of the past four seasons.Olson hit 29 homers and drove in 85 runs while Chapman had 24 homers and 68 RBIs in his first full major league season. He is coming off left shoulder surgery in December.“Now that I think about it, wow, it was because of these young guys,” Davis said of the recent success. “They bring something fresh, and that’s what Oakland needs is some freshness.”ROTATION FACES: The A’s are counting on veteran starters Mike Fiers and Marco Estrada to lead the rotation until everyone is healthy again.Fiers returned on a $14.1 million, two-year deal in December, then Estrada received a $4 million, one-year contract in January. The A’s acquired Fiers in August from Detroit, and he helped the club reach the playoffs for the first time since 2014. He went 5-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 10 outings with nine starts after joining Oakland.Brett Anderson is back with the A’s and the lefty also is slated to be in the rotation when the season starts.Lefty ace Sean Manaea pitched a no-hitter against Boston on April 21 then underwent shoulder surgery in September. He is expected to be out until around the All-Star break.Jharel Cotton had Tommy John surgery in March, followed by three others who also underwent the elbow ligament replacement surgery: departed 2018 opening day starter Kendall Graveman, Daniel Gossett and top prospect A.J. Puk.TOP PROSPECT: While Jesus Luzardo didn’t get named to the roster for Japan, he is still hopeful of breaking camp with a big league spot. These five sporting tragedies which changed the world forever remind us of fallen sporting heroes and our collective loss.1) HillsboroughFor many people, when you think of sporting tragedies, you think of the Hillsborough disaster. On 15th April 1989, at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives, and many more were injured. The stadium was overcrowded, and fans were trampled beneath the stands as a series of errors lead to the deaths. The controversy around Hillsborough led to a huge cover-up, false reporting and years of campaigning for justice for the victims. It was only recently that the families affected by Hillsborough got the verdict they wanted, and though the disaster was decades ago, court proceedings are ongoing.2) Munich Olympics MassacreThe 1972 Olympics are mostly remembered for the awful kidnap and murder of Israeli Olympic athletes. This tragic event saw the Munich Olympic village invaded by a Palestinian terror group known as ‘Black September’. The group murdered two Israeli athletes Giancarlo Stanton Jersey , with 9 taken hostage and later killed along with 5 guerillas and a policeman.Decades later, the hostilities between Israel and Palestine continue, and this sporting tragedy is often referenced for the increase in tensions it caused as well as the awful deaths.3) Zambian National Football Team Plane CrashThere have been a number of tragic plane crashes which involved sportsmen and women. One of the most poignant is the 1993 plane crash which killed the whole Zambian National Football team. Travelling en-route to Senegal with high hopes on April 2th 1993, all the members of the team tragically lost their lives. Diplomatic relations between Zambia and Gabon were shattered, both sides blaming each other for the tragedy.4) Black Sox ScandalIn 1919, the first major case of corruption in American sports changed the way the country and the government thought about gambling and professional sports, taking sports betting out of the spotlight and relegating it into the shadows. The allegations stated that members of the Chicago White Sox were paid $10,000 if they lost against the Cincinnati Reds. This led to the US Federal Government banning sports betting in many states, creating the perfect opportunity for criminal gangs to exploit and take over the market. The repercussions of this are still felt, as illegal gambling remains a huge source of income for organised crime syndicates.5) Boston BombingOne of the most tragic sporting events in recent years was the bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon. Multiple bombs were set off near the finish line of this huge sporting event. There were over 170 people injured and three people killed, including an eight-year-old child. The two bombs were homemade pressure-cooker devices, and the police detonated a thirdThe suspects Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev murdered a police officer, kidnapped a man and had a shoot out which injured and eventually killed another policeman. Tamerlan was killed, and Dzhokhar was later found hiding in a boat in someone’s backyard. He claimed that they had been motivated by extremist Islamic beliefs and that they were self-radicalised, causing huge concern in the states. He was later sentenced to death.

ARLINGTON , Va. (AP) — All it took were some beef-and-cheese taquitos and 10-for-$2 mini-tacos from 7-Eleven to seal NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom’s $137.5 million deal with the New York Mets.OK, well, not quite.“I only had a couple bites,” deGrom said with a smile Wednesday at a hotel outside Washington, where he discussed his new five-year contract on the eve of the Mets’ season opener against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals. After weeks of back-and-forth dating to before spring training, it wasn’t until Monday that deGrom and the Mets were able to work out terms, including a guaranteed $52.5 million deferred into the 2030s. There is a team option for 2024 that, if exercised, would raise the total to $170 million over six years, including $67.5 million deferred. It was an unusual negotiation from the get-go, given that Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen used to be deGrom’s agent.“I know a lot of people were worried about Brodie — which side he would be on and how that would all work out,” said Jeff Wilpon, the club’s chief operating officer. “Jacob and I did smile a couple times with what was going on in the room. But we got it done.”The agreement was finalized during a session that lasted about nine hours at the airport in Sarasota, Florida, where the team played its final Grapefruit League exhibition on Monday. When the deal was done, deGrom flew to New York for a physical exam. His teammates went to Syracuse for a workout.“Long day,” deGrom said.“At one point, we hadn’t eaten for about six or seven hours Josh Tomlin Jersey ,” Van Wagenen said, “so I had to make a 7-Eleven run.”DeGrom, a right-hander who turns 31 in June, had a 1.70 ERA in 2018 and allowed three runs or fewer in his final 29 starts. His record was 10-9 on a Mets team that went 77-85.He is 55-41 with a 2.67 ERA in five seasons in the majors.“It’s a relief. It definitely is,” deGrom said about reaching a deal. “When it’s talked about, every time you throw, you do think about it. But it’s a relief, and I’m looking forward to getting the season started.”That’ll happen with a marquee matchup at Nationals Park between him and Scherzer, the runner-up in last year’s NL Cy Young voting and a three-time winner himself. It also marks the start of life for the Nationals without Bryce Harper, the 2015 MVP who left as a free agent to join the Philadelphia Phillies.“You’re cognizant when you’re facing somebody as good as Jake, you’ve got to bring your A game. But it’s opening day. Everybody’s going to bring their A game. No one’s coming out flat, first game of the year. Everybody’s going to be coming out full tilt. You expect that,” Scherzer said. “For me, I’m facing their lineup; I’m not necessarily facing Jake. He’s not facing me; he’s facing our lineup. So really the contest is between us and the hitting coaches.”NOTES: Rookie 1B Pete Alonso will be on the Mets’ opening day roster and is expected to be in the starting lineup. “He showed us, and he certainly showed his teammates, that … he earned it,” Van Wagenen said. As for whether the team was tempted to have Alonso start the season in the minors to delay the start of his service clock, the GM said: “I do want to focus on winning games. Let’s win as many as we can Carlos Carrasco Jersey , as early as we can in the season. And I’m not of the mindset that we should be sacrificing the best product for the fans and the best product for the other 24 guys in that clubhouse to save service time or potential future money six years down the road.” … C Travis d’Arnaud (Tommy John surgery) will begin the season on the injured list. … New York signed 35-year-old catcher Rene Rivera to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse. Rivera has played for eight teams during his 10 seasons in the majors, and this will be his third stint in the Mets’ organization. He played for New York in the big leagues from 2016-17. Spoiler Alert: The Tigers won the trade. Isaac Paredes was one of four teenagers to play in the Eastern League in 2018 (two of the others being breakout star Juan Soto and uber-prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr.), while Jeimer Candelario played 144 games en route to a respectable 2.5 fWAR season. Not bad for his first full campaign in the big leagues.Jeimer Candelario, meanwhile, deserves praise for posting a 2.5 fWAR campaign as a 24-year-old third baseman stuck at the beginning of a rebuild. That said, Candelario’s season is a two-sided tale. In 2018, Candelario excelled in the field, but took a step back at the plate.Jeimer Candelario posted a very respectable 5.2 runs above average defensively per Fangraphs this season. This places him as the seventh-best fielding third baseman in MLB this past season, and the fourth-best in the American League. Only Matt Chapman (13.1!!!) Cliff Pennington Jersey , Kyle Seager (8.8), and Yolmer Sanchez (5.3, but in 11 more games than Candelario) were better. This is a great sign for Candelario moving forward. Candelario was a 45-grade fielder as a prospect and was worth -1.4 runs in the field in limited action in 2017. Because of this, he was expected to be slightly below average as a fielder. With this impressive showing in 2018, however, Candelario has the potential to be an asset at the plate and in the field moving forward. This is great news as the Tigers continue to build their future around high-end pitching prospects. Unfortunately, the brave souls who watched most of the Tigers’ 2018 campaign know that Candelario’s defensive progress was not what defined his 2018 season. Candelario slowed down as the season went on, and the Tigers better hope that he is more fully prepared for the marathon that is a 162-game schedule. One big stat: .293 on-base percentage from June to OctoberWhile Jeimer Candelario exceeded expectations in the field this past season, he faltered at the plate. In 2017, Candelario posted all-around impressive numbers: a .359 on-base percentage, a nice 112 wRC+ mark, and 36 total hits in 38 games. 2018 was not as kind to him. He went from being an above-average hitter to a slightly below-average hitter, as his wRC+ fell to 95 and his on-base percentage fell to .317. Additionally, he only amassed 121 hits in 144 games. Perhaps the most concerning thing about Candelario’s season, however, was his regression as the season moved on. Jeimer Candelario Offense by MonthMonthAVGOBPABMonthAVGOBPABCandelario had an impressive two months to start the seaspn, finishing with a .368 on-base percentage in 171 at-bats, eclipsing his .359 mark from 2017. After missing time with a left wrist injury Joey Votto Jersey , the wheels seemed to come off. He struggled through June to the tune of a .172 batting average, and while he was able to draw 16 walks throughout the month, opposing pitchers adjusted the rest of the season. As a result, Candelario posted an abysmal .217 on-base percentage in July, and from June to October posted a very disappointing .293.Some of Candelario’s other splits are equally worrisome. He hit .199 against righties this past season after hitting .269 against them in 2017. The shift caught up to him in 2018, as well, as he hit .237 in 156 AB against the shift after hitting .313 in a small sample size of 16 AB against the shift in 2017.So, is Candelario capable of bouncing back from this offensive regression to become the 4 fWAR player he is capable of being? Sure. He posted a 131 wRC+ against lefties, had a decently low .279 BABIP (implying he is due for a bounce-back 2019 campaign), and he walked 10.7% of the time in 2018 (it’s always nice to have a player with a walk percentage over 10 percent in your lineup). He also hit 19 home runs in a pitcher-friendly ballpark and was a beneficiary of the Ron Gardenhire regime, as he was worth 2.8 runs above average as a base runner throughout 2018.For Candelario, 2018 was two steps forward and one big step back. His peripherals look good, his fielding looks great, and he will only be 25 entering next season. In a 2019 season that will be filled with anticipation for prospect debuts, remember to keep a close eye on the young third baseman.

I hope you washed your mug Matt Adams Jersey , ‘cause I’m gonna fill it up with my word coffee."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Farmers onlyFeaturesPlayoffsHistory/Hall of FameWhat’s up, Reds - Last day of the Winter MeetingsNew,51commentsI hope you washed your mug, ‘cause I’m gonna fill it up with my word coffee.ByCharlie Scrabbles@ChuckScrabblesDec 13, 2018,7:06am ESTShareTweetShareShareWhat’s up, Reds - Last day of the Winter MeetingsTommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsThe Reds have been the hustlingest hustlers in Vegas this week. A number of mucky-mucks have noted just how busy the organization has been, pestering everyone from every organization and earning thinly concealed grimaces from the kind and hard-working service folks at the hotel. So many half-empty cans of Fresca and spent-up vape cartridges. So what have they been doing this whole time? Well, the headliner is last night’s acquisition of Tanner Roark. For all the fraz and bluster the last few months about getting the pitching and such, Roark is maybe not the most thrilling guy, at first glance. I mean, we’ve been talking about Corey Kluber and Dallas Keuchel and all, and Tanner Roark isn’t one of them. But you really should not be disappointed here. In fact, I think this is one of the smartest moves the Reds have made in a while. While Roark may not be an ace, he is definitely good. He has thrown 180 or more innings for three years running and has posted a respectable 3.89 ERA in that span. He’s the kind of pitcher that gets strikeouts, limits walks, and induces weak contact. How many guys have the Reds had like that over the last few seasons? And here’s the best part: the price was way cheap. He will make a hair under $10 million this season before being eligible for free agency. And the pitcher the Reds sent to the Nats Kevin Long Jersey , Tanner Rainey, is an acceptable loss. He has all the talent in the world, but he has always struggled to find the plate. It’s possible that he turns into one of the very best bullpen arms in the world, but that possibility is remote. He is a lottery ticket.I’m low-key psyched as all hell about this trade. It isn’t the big flashy top-of-the-rotation ace we’ve all been clamoring for, but he isn’t so far from it. And the cost is way reasonable. This is a really smart move.*They’ve had some wild chats with the Dodgers, it seems:This is a really hairy idea, so let’s try to make some sense of it. It is clear at this point that Homer Bailey is a sunk cost. He has had too many injuries. It’s sad and I feel badly about it, but here we are. The obvious and straight-forward move is to just designate him for assignment, cut him his check, and thank him for being a Red for nearly 15 years. But, I guess the line of thinking goes, if they could perhaps extract some value out of it, it wouldn’t be a bad thing, right? It’d certainly look better than just dropping him. So the angle is that Homer Bailey’s contract counts a bit differently towards luxury tax calculations. He is owed a total of $28 million yet, but the lux-tax total is only about $17 million for this season. That doesn’t do shit for the Reds, but for the Dodgers, who have danced with that lux tax threshold many times , it does some shit. So for them, and them only really, Homer and contract have a bit of value. They’d like to shed some money, and with Matt Kemp and Alex Wood set to make $30 million or so this season, we could have a match. Maybe the Reds add a Tanner Rainey-type to it and I really like it. If the Reds can add the likes of Alex Wood and Tanner Roark without giving up any significant prospects, I’d do a back flip. Neither is a long-term fix, but those two alone could fill in a 10-WAR improvement over last year’s rotation.*There have also been some wackier things out there involving JT Realmuto and Tucker Barnhart. I don’t want to get too far into this because I’m still confused about it and don’t know what to think, but what I’ve seen is that the Reds would send Taylor Trammell, and maybe Barnhart as well, for Realmuto. I really, really like Trammell and I really want to keep him. But if they are trading him, I don’t know if “upgrade at catcher” is the project to which I dedicate those resources. My vibe on this is that the Reds have been talking to absolutely everyone about absolutely everything, so this isn’t a likely trade or even one that has advanced beyond an initial phone call. But that’s just my vibe.*In other news, the Rays inked Charlie Morton for two years and $30 million.I’m a little plecked about this. Of the pitchers available in free agency, I thought Morton would be the best value. He is 35, so the commitment necessary had a pretty low ceiling. And he’s been fantastic for the Astros for the last two seasons. He’s basically a Tanner Roark kind of acquisition. I’d love for the Reds to have signed him to this deal, but I guess that’s nuggets Ryan Zimmerman Jersey , huh. *The Reds have also been heard talking about Marcus Stroman and Sonny Gray, a couple more rotation additions. Dick Williams says they are far from finished after the Roark trade, so keep your head up. It probably won’t happen today, but the hot stove will be simmering all winter long, methinks. The Phillies, Yankees and Chicago White Sox are the three teams that have been prominently linked to Manny Machado this offseason. Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago recently laid out the case for him to land on the South Side of Chicago:"The White Sox seem to remain in good position to actually win this thing. They have made their offer, while it's unclear if other teams have or haven't. They have a strong pitch of Machado as the centerpiece playing alongside Eloy Jimenez, Michael Kopech, Dylan Cease, Luis Robert and others for the better part of the next decade. They can offer what no other team can in the opportunity to play alongside Yonder Alonso and Jon Jay, two of Machado's good friends from Miami and, in Alonso's case, his brother-in-law."After a flurry of reports emerged that the White Sox's offer was for $175 million over seven years, Machado's agent, Dan Lozano, released a statement (via Mark Feinsand of in which he called those reports "inaccurate and reckless" and panned the media's handling of the situation. The rebuilding White Sox seem ready to turn a corner, and with a loaded farm system and a bright future , their pitch is a compelling one. It would be a transformative move for the franchise, and the steep price it will take to get a deal done looks like one worth paying. We'll say an eight-year deal with an annual value of $34 million gets Machado in a White Sox jersey.Bryce Harper: Returns to the Nationals on a 10-Year, $350 Million Deal8 of 8Dustin Bradford/Getty ImagesThere's a good chance Bryce Harper is going to wait until Manny Machado signs to let him set the market. If Machado winds up with a $34 million annual salary, Harper is going to want $35 million-plus. That's just how this thing works. So if we're predicting an eight-year, $272 million deal for Machado, would two extra years and an extra $1 million annually be enough to get Harper to sign on the dotted line? The Nationals offered Harper a 10-year, $300 million deal in September that he turned down, according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.Jim Bowden of The Athletic reported at the beginning of January that the Nationals had made another offer that was "much more" than their initial proposal. So even though the Nats gave left-hander Patrick Corbin a six-year, $140 million contract in early December, it sounds like they are still willing to spend.Once the dust settles on a Machado deal and Harper has a better idea of his target contract, Washington could move quickly to make its final offer and try to bring back its homegrown star.Based on these predictions, that means the Phillies would wind up without either superstar, an outcome that seemed impossible when the offseason began. Now it at least looks like a reasonable bold prediction. All stats courtesy of Baseball Reference and FanGraphs unless otherwise noted.

You don’t often see double-digit strikeouts in a spring training game. Robbie Ray got there this afternoon."Record: 12-15-2. Change on 2018: -0.5. 5-inning record: 12-12-5.The Arizona offense got off to a quick start against San Francisco in Scottsdale. CF Jarrod Dyson singled , taking second on an error, and after another single by 3B Eduardo Escobar, Dyson came across for the first run of the game. The D-backs advantage was doubled in the third inning on LF David Peralta’s first homer, coming with two outs. Robbie Ray was looking good, striking out seven of the first ten Giants he faced. But he ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing four consecutive SF batters to reach, as the Giants leveled the game Victor Martinez Jersey , scoring twice. Still, Ray ended the day with 11 K’s over 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a pair of walks. Yoan Lopez tidied up the sixth inning, but the Giants took the lead in the seventh on a solo home-run off Archie Bradley. That was the end of the day's scoring, neither side being able to do anything the rest of the way. Robbie Scott loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but something called a Michael Kohn got a double play. Escobar had two of the D-backs nine hits, while C Alex Avila singled and walked. Tomorrow. the D-backs face the Brewers in the final game for the year at Salt River Fields , with a slightly earlier than usual start, at 12:10 pm. Zack Godley is the scheduled starter for Arizona. HOUSTON (AP) — Seattle’s Felix Hernandez has lost his spot in the rotation in the wake of his latest terrible start in a season filled with struggles. The right-hander, who threw a perfect game in 2012, will pitch out of the bullpen for the first time in his career. He’s having the worst season of 14-year career as the Mariners chase their first playoff berth since 2001. Hernandez has a career-high 5.73 ERA this season and is 0-4 in his last five starts, capped by a clunker against the Rangers on Tuesday when he allowed a career-high 11 runs — seven earned — on eight hits in six innings. The six-time All-Star and 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, who earned the nickname King Felix for his majestic presence on the mound, trotted from the dugout to the bullpen after the third inning Thursday night against Houston but did not pitch. Manager Scott Servais announced the decision postgame.Servais said he spoke with Hernandez before the game and informed him of the decision. Hernandez has spent his entire career with the Mariners James McCann Jersey , where all his 398 appearances have been as a starter.“He’s done an unbelievable job as a Mariner,” Servais said. “And I certainly don’t take any of this lightly, but I just think trying to make the best decision for the ballclub and really the best decision for Felix at this point is just take a breath. Step back, gather yourself.”Servais said the conversation was a difficult one.“Certainly, respect him and everything he’s done here throughout his career, but these things happen and ultimately it’s about the team,” he said. “It’s never easy but again hopefully he takes it the right way. He’ll get a chance to pitch at some point down there and maybe he can work his way back in the rotation. We’ll see. He’ll let us know on that.”Hernandez declined to speak to reporters when approached after the game. The 32-year-old right-hander is 168-124 with a 3.32 ERA in his career. But after posting an AL-leading and career-best 2.14 ERA in 2014 , Hernandez has become increasingly less dominant each year, bottoming out this season by going 8-10 in 23 starts.Hernandez got two wins to end the month of June before a terrible July where he went 0-3, with the lowlight coming when he allowed six hits and seven runs in just 2 2/3 innings of an 11-5 loss to the Angels.Servais said the team hasn’t decided who will take Hernandez’s spot in the rotation Sunday in the finale of this four-game series.

Nobody wants to take that one off of Dipoto’s hands.....In other words, tanking the MLB team ala Cubs and Astros. Color me crazy, but shouldn’t that happen before one tanks their farm?..........But the other side of the coin is that this makes for a good source of talent to be redistributed, something that MLB has been lacking since, well, since the Marlins did their dump just some number of months ago..........I would think that this would shut up Giants fans. They had to dive into the Dodgers Front Office to find their new President of Baseball Ops, hiring Farhan Zaidi. Does this mean that Kin Ng needs to take her resume back south to LA now that SFG has passed her by? Oh, wait, the Dodgers already have that one on file..........As if there really was any realistic outcome of anything different. Just because the Angels need pitching, it was always silly talk to think that CC Sabathia might do his final year out of Anaheim. Just days into the FA market, Sabathia re-upped with the Yankees for $8 million.........No, the guy you really WANT is Patrick Corbin. Technically, you want him BACK. Recall that we drafted him in that amazing 2009 LAA June draft class. But we shipped him off to Arizona along with Tyler Skaggs, Joe Saunders , and Rafael Rodriguez...all for Dan Haren. I should point out, as well, that Corbin is yet another LAA choice of recent vintage that had to undergo TJ surgery. At least it’s now behind him. Unelss we sign him. Then he would tear the UCL in his non-throwing arm..........This does not bode well for teams hankerin’ for Bryce Harper. Scott Boras and he apparently turned down a last-day offer from the Nationals supposedly between $300 and $400 million..........I wonder, when the full voting is revealed, how far down the stack was Jacob deGrom in NL MVP voting? Sure, he wasn’t a finalist, but that just means that he was not in the Top 3. He could have been 4th. His season was sick, although his team was shit. So I can see why this would not be one of those rare years when a pitcher takes MVP honors away from a guy who produced like Christian Yelich. But I can’t see deGrom legitimately being lower than 4th or 5th on the list..........On the AL side, Scott Boras is all up in arms because J.D. Martinez was “snubbed”. What a crock. (I did throw shade on this up above.) The three named finalists were legit multi-dimensional contributors. Martinez will get plenty of MVP love, just not enough to make him a Top 3. But Boras is gonna Boras, and pimping clients is what a Boras should be doing. It’s the job..........Oh, interesting. The GM’s are going to do something productive this week, after all. They will have a breakout session to discuss what to do about sign-stealing via electronic means..........Wow, that didn’t take long. Just days after the Angels hire away bullpen coach from the Astros, a guy who is also disciplined in pitcher development and health, but the Houston miracle run of good rotation luck comes to a screeching halt. Lance McCullers, Jr. is to undergo TJ surgery and will be lost for the entirety of 2019. For those not counting at home, McCullers is a Halo killer. In corollary news, ain’t it grand that Shohei Ohtani had that same surgery Darin Erstad Jersey , will miss the same season, but because he is a two-way phenom he will still shine bright as DH all frikkin’ year!?!..........Dangit. Had it not been for Bryce Harper making a spectacle out of the idiocy of umpire Laz Diaz, Jaime Barria would have garnered Worst Called Strike for 2018, Second Half..........Be careful there, young whippersnappers taking over baseball. There are limits to all that power that comes from breathing the ether of an MLB Front Office. Age discrimination is a real thing..........If MLB were to expand, I can see why expanding to the Dakotas would not be a good idea. But why not the South?..........This slays me. It’s a chat with the Cardinals’ hitting coach, Jeff Albert. “When I was a younger, there was a DVD called Hitters on Hitting...” Albert goes on to discuss other things, but I stopped there for a long pause. When I was younger, by way of comparison, it was long, long long before DVDs. Honest as all hell, back in the 60’s we had instructional books that looked a lot more like the DMV handbook, but in comic book form. THAT was how we studied the craft. Jeff Albert is only 38..........Sticking with coaches, it sure must feel good to be wanted when you are an MLB coach, especially with all the churn among the ranks of your bosses, MLB managers. And at this time of the year, especially so. So here com the Reds. Unable to beat ‘em, they are hiring ‘em. Not long after hiring away the playoff-Brewers pitching coach , the Reds have hired away the playoff-Dodgers hitting coach. I am following and linking to coaching changes because we do have some current interest in that market..........I’m so confused. Here is an excerpt from a book titled The Story of Baseball in 100 photographs, and the excerpt runs on for 1000 words, but only 1 photo..........Maybe that TV mega contract gravy train isn’t going to derail soon, after all..........And FOX is sticking around..........The Duffle BagNot a bad idea. A Minor League team in Santa Barbara..........(h/t reddit) Right after Bill Mazeroski walks off the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 7 of the 1960 WS against the Yankees, these people celebrated the very definition of nosebleed seating...........Sorry, dude, but the Angels mascot should be an Angel, which is defined as the lightest thing in Creation. If not that, then The Rally Monkey. About 7 pounds in real life, but about 4 ounces as getting the stuffing shaken out of it in the hands of kids in the family section.........Mookie Betts is having a really, really good month..........Chicks still dig the long ball, which is why all these strikeouts are dispiriting..........
